A Walk Among the Tombstones

Plot

A Walk Among the Tombstones, released in 2014, is an American crime thriller film based on the 1992 novel of the same name by Lawrence Block. Directed by Scott Frank, the film stars Liam Neeson as Matthew Scudder, a former NYPD homicide detective turned private investigator. The film is set in New York City and opens with Matthew Scudder, a rugged, hard-boiled private investigator, visiting a fellow recovering addict at a local AA meeting. It's here that Scudder first meets T.J. (Dan Stevens), the brother of a man who has been murdered by a local meth ring. Matthew's intervention fails, and T.J. is ultimately killed. As the story shifts forward in time, we meet Herve (Mat Vayle) and Kenny (Boyd Holbrook), a pair of drug-addled thugs who have kidnapped two young women. In order to secure their release, Herve's family agrees to pay a ransom to their captors, but a series of gruesome events ultimately leads to the women's murder. Desperate for justice, Kenny's family reaches out to Matthew Scudder with a request to track down the individuals responsible for their daughter's gruesome death. Intrigued by the prospect of solving the murder, Scudder agrees to investigate and discovers that Herve's family has ties to a local methamphetamine distribution operation. This information sets Scudder on a path to confront a ruthless and cunning drug kingpin known only as the "Mexican". As Scudder becomes more and more entrenched in the investigation, he discovers that the murdered women, whose names are Sarah (Danika Yarosh) and Kim (Quincy Samuels-Thomas), were not random victims. Scudder meets with Kenny's father, a desperate and grief-stricken man consumed by anger and guilt. He becomes convinced that Scudder can help him uncover the identity of the individuals responsible for his daughter's death. However, when Scudder discovers that Sarah and Kim were brutally murdered and that the police are not doing anything to pursue justice, he agrees to take the case. Using a combination of old-school detective work and his vast connection network of NYPD officials, Matthew delves into the world of methamphetamine and sets out to unravel the mystery behind the women's disappearance. He becomes an increasingly isolated investigator who operates outside of the law. Scudder starts questioning suspects, gathering information, and gathering evidence. The investigation puts Scudder at odds with the Mexican, whose influence extends far beyond New York City's streets. Scudder soon finds himself facing off against the ruthless kingpin in a high-stakes showdown, with the lives of his friends and family hanging in the balance. The investigation reveals a web of dark secrets and corruption that extends to the highest levels of New York's narcotics trade. Throughout the investigation, Matthew Scudder's moral ambiguities and his dark past surface as the film delves into his personal issues. Scudder has a difficult time dealing with the harsh realities of his own life as well as those of his clients, including the Mexican. This makes him question his role as a detective and a helper to those in need. As such, this crime thriller delves deeper into the gritty world of 80s New York City. In the end, Matthew Scudder's quest for justice leads him to seek out the Mexican's enforcer, Victor, a cold-blooded killer who is directly responsible for the disappearance and brutal murder of the two young women. Using his instincts, Matthew confronts Victor at his workplace, a seedy bar at the outskirts of town, in a tense and violent confrontation. Matthew emerges victorious but at a significant cost; his newfound isolation is reinforced, and his personal demons have resurfaced, making him confront the harsh realities of his life. In the end, the Mexican kingpin is arrested by the authorities thanks to Matthew's intervention, but Scudder himself remains on the fringes of society, driven by the weight of his past and the unending cycle of violence that has become his life. Matthew Scudder's struggle with his demons and his moral compass raises a question as to whether justice can ever truly be achieved in such a broken and corrupt world. Ultimately, the film presents a bleak portrayal of justice in modern-day society, highlighting the flaws in the system that prevent those truly responsible from ever facing justice for their horrific crimes.
