Bachelor Mother

Plot

'Very well, let us get on with business' - this phrase was often uttered by Polly Parrish, a diligent and efficient clerk working at Merlin's Department Store, which was owned by the patriarchal and conservative David Merlin. The store was a household name, synonymous with quality and reliability, but little did the customers know of the complex dynamics that governed the lives of those who worked within its hallowed walls. This was the background against which a curious and somewhat absurd drama, Bachelor Mother, unfolded. The film begins on a rather inauspicious note, with Polly Parrish facing a difficult day at work. Her boss, David Merlin, was notorious for his short temper and high expectations, making it almost impossible for Polly to keep up. Her duties as a store clerk often left her frazzled, and her interactions with David were always strained. However, her troubles took an unexpected turn when a baby was found on the doorstep of her apartment. The child's origin remained a mystery, but it soon became evident that Polly was the last person to have handled the baby, and so she was conveniently assumed to be the mother. Polly's initial reaction to the foundling was one of horror. She had always been very particular about her personal life and the prospect of motherhood terrified her. In her view, she was not a motherly person and the thought of caring for a baby on a permanent basis was unbearable. However, things soon began to spiral out of control. David Merlin, Polly's boss and her assumed father, took a rather draconian view of the situation. According to him, Polly had no choice but to accept responsibility for the child. He believed that she needed guidance and stability, and he was determined to become the guiding force in her life. As events unfold, David becomes increasingly obsessed with ensuring that Polly settles down and becomes a respectable mother. He takes it upon himself to play the role of mentor, offering her advice and guidance and even going to the extent of taking her on a series of dates in an effort to teach her how to be a better parent. At first, Polly resists David's efforts but soon finds herself becoming the center of attention at the store and the object of gossip among the employees. While Polly may initially resent David's interference, there is a deep-seated vulnerability that makes her more receptive to his overtures. Despite her reluctance, she begins to feel a sense of responsibility towards the child and starts to see David as a means to an end - a way out of the situation that has landed her in a maelstrom of uncertainty. David, for his part, has his own motivations for behaving the way he does. He genuinely believes that Polly needs his help and that his own life has been somewhat lacking in meaning since his wife passed away. The dynamics between Polly and David are further complicated by the appearance of various characters, including David's long-lost brother and his charming and carefree son, Ted. Ted's easy way with women and children marks a stark contrast to the rigid and controlling David, and Polly soon finds herself caught in the web of his affections. Meanwhile, the mystery surrounding the baby's origins continues to haunt the story, threatening to blow Polly's cover and force David to confront the fact that he has fallen deeply for the unwed mother he has taken under his wing. As the story hurtles towards its climax, the complexities of the situation are revealed to be far more complicated than they initially appeared. David's motives for his actions are multifaceted, influenced by a mix of altruism, possessiveness, and an unspoken desire for love. In contrast, Polly grapples with her own insecurities, torn between the need for independence and her deepening feelings for the man who is trying to shape her into a 'respectable' mother. The film's resolution, while somewhat predictable, brings together the various strands of the narrative in a satisfying and poignant conclusion. Ultimately, Polly and David find a way to bridge the gap between them, but not before they confront the complexities of their own emotions and the societal norms that govern their lives. Through Bachelor Mother, the film offers a commentary on the constraints imposed by societal expectations, the perils of meddling, and the power of love to bridge even the widest of divisions.
