Barbie as The Princess & the Pauper
Plot
In "Barbie as The Princess & the Pauper," Princess Anastasia and lookalike Anneliese, a commoner, become fast friends after meeting by chance at a royal ball. Unbeknownst to anyone else, they are identical in appearance, which sparks a chain of events that leads them on an exciting adventure. As Princess Anastasia longs for a life free from royal responsibilities, she and Anneliese decide to switch places and experience each other's lives. The princess dons a disguise as the commoner, while Anneliese takes her place at the palace. Initially, both women find their new roles challenging but also liberating. As they navigate their respective worlds, they learn valuable lessons about friendship, loyalty, and the importance of being true to oneself. They also discover that being a princess or a commoner is not just about the role one plays, but rather about the heart and character one possesses. Meanwhile, Prince Dimitri, Anastasia's love interest, becomes smitten with the "princess" he thinks Anneliese is, while Anneliese catches the eye of Prince Nelson, who falls for the genuine article. This mistaken identity leads to a series of hilarious misunderstandings and comedic situations that add to the film's charm. Throughout their experiences, Anastasia and Anneliese grow closer as they support each other through the ups and downs of their dual lives. In the end, they must confront the consequences of their deception and decide whether to remain in their new roles or switch back to their original identities. With its uplifting message, stunning animation, and catchy musical numbers, "Barbie as The Princess & the Pauper" is a delightful treat for children and parents alike. This modern retelling of the classic tale reminds us that true beauty comes from within and that friendship can conquer all.

Unquestionably the best of the Barbie movies. I still get teary-eyed listening to the soundtrack even now. I adore the premise, two souls striving for freedom and their dreams. Erika and Dominic might have been the first pairing I ever truly shipped?

Still watching this over and over, even at this age...

The music is absolutely wonderful! The songs "Free" and "Cat's Meow" are brilliantly composed and performed. As Barbie's first musical animation, it's a resounding success. The prince loves Erika because he believes in her, and I love her because I believe in her too! This movie features such a distinctive and witty heroine. Even though it ends with the classic prince and princess happily ever after, I appreciate how the women in this story are brave enough to be themselves and face many realistic considerations, instead of just being damsels in distress waiting to be rescued. Free and Love.

Stumbled upon this while looking up Ingrid Bergman's "Anastasia"... This was a huge favorite of mine in middle school, probably my most loved of the entire Barbie series. Actually, I love all the Barbie movies! Watching them makes the world seem like a better place, and I just want to become a kind and gentle-hearted girl. (Of course, the effect only lasts for about two hours... then I revert back to being a tough, stubborn girl again.
