Plot

The year is 1987, and the quaint neighborhood of Sunshine City is about to undergo a radical transformation. A wealthy and ruthless tycoon, Marv Lowe (Janet Carroll), is hell-bent on acquiring a block of apartments to tear down and build a gleaming new skyscraper, the Sun City Center. The residents of this soon-to-be-lost community, led by the fiercely dedicated and lovable Gwen Tyler (Kathryn Walker), are determined to fight against Marv's aggressive tactics. As the clock ticks closer to the deadline for eviction, tensions rise between the residents and their nemesis. Marv's goons, a group of rough-around-the-edges bums, resort to intimidation, vandalism, and even violence to wear down the holdouts. Amidst this chaos, two tiny mechanical aliens, Fletch and Boomer (voiced by Hume Cronyn), crash-land on Earth in the city's park. These diminutive extraterrestrials, each about four inches tall, are a type of energy-sucking device called "recharger-bots" or "recharge units," which feed on electrical energy to recharge their batteries. Initially, Gwen discovers the alien pair and mistakes them for a harmless novelty item left behind by children. However, the truth unravels when Fletch and Boomer suddenly sprout arms and legs and demonstrate their extraordinary capabilities, defying explanation. Despite their miniature stature, the aliens prove to be incredibly resourceful and ingenious problem solvers. When Marv's goons threaten to destroy their home, Gwen and the residents invite Fletch and Boomer to stay and help them resist eviction. The aliens, who have also been observing the chaos unfolding below, are drawn to the warm-hearted and determined community. Boomer, who communicates through a series of clicks, beeps, and whistles, quickly bonds with a quiet young boy, Eddie Tyler (Eric Rowe), Gwen's nephew. Fletch, meanwhile, connects with Gwen's eccentric artist friend, Harry Baxter (Michael O'Donoghue). Armed with their remarkable mechanical prowess and determination, Fletch and Boomer join the fight against Marv. They concoct an array of wacky yet ingenious schemes to foil the tycoon's plans. Fletch, a master of miniaturized engineering, rigs up a series of clever traps to disable Marv's goons, while Boomer uses his recharging power to fuel an assortment of fantastical contraptions. Together, the aliens and their new friends concoct an elaborate ruse to expose Marv's deceitful intentions to the local authorities. As the battle between the residents and Marv reaches a fever pitch, the community comes together in a stunning display of unity and ingenuity. With the residents' determination paired with Fletch and Boomer's mechanical wizardry, the tide begins to shift. In a heart-stopping finale, a climactic showdown erupts between the people and Marv's demolition crew. Despite the odds, the residents hold their ground as Fletch and Boomer orchestrate a dazzling display of mechanical prowess, disabling Marv's heavy machinery, and shattering the plans to tear down the block. The outcome is a resounding victory for the Sunshine City residents, as they win their right to stay in their beloved community. As the clock strikes the deadline for eviction, Marv's plans are foiled, and the residents erupt into cheers, hailing Fletch and Boomer as heroes. As the camera pans out, Fletch and Boomer, now hailed as honorary residents, stand proudly alongside their new friends, a testament to the power of community spirit and the incredible possibilities that emerge when even the most unlikely of allies join forces. With their mission accomplished, the two recharging units bid the community farewell, flying off into the night to recharge and return to their own planet.
