Plot

In the midst of the 1960s' Cold War paranoia, the Weber family lives in a state of uncertainty, always on the lookout for a potential threat to their lives. The father, Calvin, a zealous survivalist, has stockpiled a bomb shelter beneath their home, filled with food, supplies, and even a vinyl record player. His goal is to create a self-sustaining community within the confines of the underground bunker, preparing his family for the inevitable nuclear apocalypse. One fateful day, Calvin receives what he believes to be a genuine warning of an impending nuclear attack. Panicked and determined to save his family, he sets the shelter's self-locking mechanism, trapping himself, wife Florence, and their son, Adam, inside. The door seals, and the family is sealed off from the world above. The Webers live in this underground world for 35 long years, oblivious to the changing times and events unfolding above. Adam, who was a young boy when the shelter was sealed, has grown into a charming and naive individual, unaware of the outside world. His upbringing within the shelter has been a unique blend of isolation and indoctrination by his overzealous father. Despite being an anachronism from a bygone era, Adam has a certain charm to him, which allows him to navigate the unfamiliar world above with a degree of awkwardness and fascination. As his father's health begins to decline, Calvin makes a desperate decision - he sends Adam to the surface to obtain essential supplies and to find a suitable bride to join their shelter-bound family. Adam's mission to the outside world is twofold: he needs to gather non-perishable food and vital medical supplies for his ailing father, and he must find a mate who can bear children and carry on the Weber family lineage. Upon leaving the shelter, Adam is catapulted into a Los Angeles that is vastly different from the one he imagined. The 1960s have given way to the 1990s, and Adam struggles to comprehend the rapid technological advancements, societal changes, and cultural nuances that have taken place during his prolonged absence. Adam's attempts to blend in with modern society, however, are met with hilarious misunderstandings and amusing situations. Clad in his dated outfit, with a hairstyle and demeanor straight out of the 1960s, Adam unwittingly sticks out in the fast-paced world above. His innocence and naivety lead him to believe that he can still live by the strict rules and norms of his underground upbringing, which causes friction with the people around him. Adam's search for a mate becomes an unexpectedly thrilling adventure. While exploring the city, he meets Eve, a confident, strong-willed, and modern woman who lives life on her own terms. The stark contrast between Eve's independent spirit and Adam's shelter-bred subservience sparks a unique connection, as the two engage in witty banter and clever interactions. Adam's interactions with Eve lead him to question the teachings of his father and the shelter's strict rules. As they develop a connection, Adam starts to realize the limitations and shortcomings of his bubble-like existence. Adam and Eve form a bond, with Adam attempting to navigate the complexities of modern relationships and Eve helping him to understand the realities of the outside world. The movie's exploration of relationships, the consequences of fear, and the human spirit serves as the backdrop for a poignant and comedic story about Adam's journey from isolation to self-discovery. As Adam and Eve grow closer, his shelter-bred naivety gives way to a new sense of purpose and belonging. Adam must confront the consequences of his father's choices and decide whether to follow his heart or return to the shelter to ensure the Webers' continued survival.
