Blockers

Plot

Blockers is a 2018 American teen comedy film directed by Kay Cannon, based on a story written by Brian Kehoe and Jim Kehoe. The film stars Leslie Mann, John Cena, and Ike Barinholtz as three overprotective parents who take drastic measures to prevent their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night. The story begins with Julie Decker (Kaitlyn Dever), a shy and sweet high school student who is nervous about her upcoming senior prom. As a close friend, Molly Flint (Haley Lu Richardson) convinces Julie to participate in a pact she made with her friends, Sadie (Gina Rodriguez) and Amanda (Aya Cash). Each of the girls have made a vow to lose their virginity on prom night, as a way to commemorate this significant milestone in their lives. However, the plan is inadvertently discovered by Julie's parents, Mitch (John Cena), an overly protective high school teacher, and his wife, Lisa Decker (Leslie Mann), a quirky and eccentric woman who is more interested in her own life than her daughter's sex life. Mitch Decker, also known as the "Blocker," is desperate to protect his daughter's innocence, while Lisa Decker is initially apathetic but eventually becomes involved in the scheme. As the night of prom approaches, Julie's father, Mitch, devises a plan to ensure that his daughter does not follow through with the planned event. However, his methods are bumbling and clumsy, often putting him in embarrassing situations. He enlists the help of his wife, Lisa, and their eccentric friend, Wade (played by Jimmy Bellinger), who is a conspiracy theorist and a conspiracy-mongering, far-right, ultra conservative. Together, the trio sets out to distract Julie and prevent her from meeting up with her friends and losing her virginity. Meanwhile, the three friends, Julie, Sadie, and Amanda, find themselves getting increasingly anxious about prom night. They are aware of the pact they made and are determined to follow through on their plans, despite the pressure and guilt they face from their parents. As the night unfolds, the girls begin to realize that prom is not just about sex but about making memories, taking risks, and growing up. Throughout the film, the Blockers' attempts to foil the girls' plans provide a lot of comedic material. Mitch's silly methods, such as using a high-tech tracking device to monitor Julie's location, and Lisa's more subtle tactics, including using her quirky style to distract her daughter, often land on their backs. Wade's character adds an extra layer of absurdity, as he begins to see the whole situation as a government conspiracy. However, as the night wears on, the Blockers begin to realize that their attempts to control their daughters' lives are not only laughable but also counterproductive. The girls grow increasingly frustrated and disappointed by their parents' overprotectiveness, leading them to make their own choices and take control of their lives. In the end, prom night turns out to be a night to remember for all the characters involved. Julie ultimately makes her own decision, while her father and his friends are left to grapple with the consequences of their actions. The film ends on a heartwarming and optimistic note, as the parents come to accept their daughters' choices and learn to let go of their overprotectiveness. Blockers is a hilarious and relatable exploration of the complexities of growing up and navigating adolescence. The film tackles themes of identity, intimacy, and independence, presenting a realistic portrayal of high school life. The performances by the cast are top-notch, particularly Leslie Mann, who shines as a quirky and memorable character. Overall, the film is a standout comedy that will leave audiences in stitches and leave them thinking about the challenges and joys of growing up.
