Boomtown

Plot

Boomtown is a 1940s American drama film directed by D.W. Griffith. Released in 1940, the movie was written by George F. Slade, and it explores themes of love, greed, and redemption set against the backdrop of the American oil boom in the early 20th century. The story revolves around Eddie Bartlett (played by Clark Gable), a rugged young drifter who, with a pregnant wife, Kitty (played by Claudette Colbert), and an infant daughter, sets out to make a better life for his family. Their current circumstances are a struggle, with Eddie barely scraping by doing odd jobs to put food on the table. When he hears stories about the oil fields in Oklahoma, where fortunes are being made overnight, a spark of hope ignites within Eddie. He decides to travel to the oil-rich region, driven by visions of a lucrative opportunity and a chance to turn his life around. Upon arrival in Boomtown, Oklahoma, Eddie is captivated by the vibrant energy and unbridled optimism that permeates the air. The oil town is a hotbed of commercial activity, replete with roughnecks, prospectors, and oil tycoons alike vying for success in the burgeoning industry. Initially, Eddie finds work as a roughneck, toiling away for minimal pay and long hours in the sweltering oil fields. However, he soon catches the eye of a prominent oil speculator, Jeff Ertie (played by James Stewart), who recognizes Eddie's potential. Encouraged by Jeff's endorsement, Eddie's fortunes begin to change. With a small loan and advice from Jeff, Eddie secures a stake in an oil well and starts his own prospecting business. The success he experiences, including a few lucky strikes, puts him and Kitty in a more comfortable financial situation and allows him to live a relatively affluent lifestyle. However, the allure of the oil wealth soon tempts Eddie, and he becomes increasingly enthralled by the excesses and extravagance that surround him in Boomtown. Ertie, recognizing the same vulnerabilities, sees an opportunity to manipulate Eddie's new circumstances for his own benefit. He begins to feed Eddie's ambition, subtly fueling his desires and exploiting his weaknesses. Kitty, sensing her husband's metamorphosis, grows increasingly distraught and disapproving of the corrupt influence surrounding Eddie. Eddie's infatuation with the easy money and the status symbol of the 'millionaire playboy lifestyle', gradually erodes his moral compass and causes him to make poor decisions – decisions that put his family at risk. He squanders his wealth on lavish parties and extravagant gifts for Kitty, while disregarding his family's needs and compromising his own integrity in the process. Kitty, exasperated by Eddie's transformation, confronts him about the harm he's caused. Eddie, caught between his new life of luxury and his genuine desire to do what's best for his family, is forced to reevaluate his priorities. As Eddie becomes more deeply entrenched in the sullied world of Boomtown's elite, Kitty's desperation reaches a boiling point. With a newfound resolve, Eddie must make a choice: return to his humble roots and cherish the love and security his family offers or succumb to the alluring promise of wealth and status. His decision will have far-reaching consequences, forever altering the dynamics of his life with Kitty and his family. Torn between the allure of material success and the love he genuinely shares with his family, Eddie ultimately makes a courageous choice, opting to rediscover his former values and recommit to the people who truly matter. With the oil boom reaching its peak, Eddie seizes the opportunity to sell his prospects for a handsome profit, allowing him to retire from the industry and start anew – with a renewed focus on his family's happiness and well-being. In the end, Eddie is seen driving away from the oil fields, leaving his past behind and embarking on a fresh path with Kathy, now with a newborn and his family safely by his side.
