Bound

Plot

In the gritty neo-noir thriller "Bound," Corky (Gina Gershon), a tough-as-nails ex-con, finds herself entangled in a web of deceit and desire as she works on an apartment renovation next to Caesar (Joe Pantoliano) and Violet (Jennifer Tilly). Caesar, a paranoid and ruthless mobster, is convinced that his girlfriend Violet is having an affair with the construction workers, including Corky. To quell his suspicions, Violet persuades Corky to pose as her sister, allowing her to maintain the illusion of marital bliss. As the two women grow closer, they begin to uncover the dark secrets and lies that surround them. Meanwhile, Caesar's obsessive behavior becomes increasingly erratic, driving him further into paranoia and violence. His grip on reality begins to slip, threatening not only his relationship with Violet but also the lives of those around him. As tensions escalate, Corky finds herself torn between her growing attraction to Violet and her loyalty to her new "sister." The two women must navigate the treacherous landscape of Caesar's world, where violence is always lurking just beneath the surface. With its themes of desire, deception, and betrayal, "Bound" is a taut and suspenseful thriller that explores the complexities of human relationships. The film's use of stylized visuals and a pulsating score adds to its sense of tension and foreboding, making it a standout in the neo-noir genre. Ultimately, "Bound" is a gripping exploration of the blurred lines between reality and illusion, love and obsession, and loyalty and betrayal. As the stakes rise and the truth begins to unravel, Corky and Violet must confront their own desires and make a choice that will have far-reaching consequences for all involved.

The Wachowskis' debut film from their brother days, a total thrill ride from a purely female perspective. The first half feels like a softcore porn, a lonely housewife seducing the handsome plumber who comes to fix the pipes (though I haven't actually seen lesbian softcore). The budget is low, with limited sets and actors, but the script is ingenious, and the visual effects are creatively done within the constraints. Combined with genre elements like gangsters, suspense, and crime, the viewing experience is never dull. I saw a three-star short review that simply said, "I don't like women who are too masculine." To come away from this film with such a man-centered piece of bullshit is just...
