Cars 2 takes place after the events of the first film and follows Lightning McQueen and his best friend, Mater, as they embark on their latest adventure - competing in the World Grand Prix in Japan, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The film introduces a new villain, Miles Axlerod, voiced by Cheech Marin, the founder of the Allinol fuel source which claims to be the most efficient in the world but has also more than doubled the horsepower in cars and only takes over minutes to re-fuel. Axlerod hires Mater to promote Allinol by obtaining fuel for the current winner of the Grand Prix competition and plans to sabotage the course during the final round of the World Grand Prix, making him impossible to win without switching these dirty Allinol racers with pure fuel. Mater, though struggling with the foreign countries, forms a close bond with his British counterpart, Finn McMissile, voiced by Michael Caine, a car with a charming, sophisticated, and cunning nature as a spy. Mater also becomes fast friends with a car named Holley Shiftwell, voiced by Mary Wheeler, who are both trying to get rid of the hazardous Allinol. This exposes Mater to the highly dramatic world of espionage, where he discovers he has a talent for deception. Mater soon becomes entangled in Finn's mission to eliminate the Allinol fuel, uncover the truth behind Axlerod's actions, and his connection to the FuelBlocker, devised by Kamiti to completely disable all cars with a Allinol tank but also ends up as the culprit. Mater becomes lost in his new and exciting connections with his British counterparts, all while feeling overwhelmed by his loyalty to Lightning McQueen and the pressure of promoting the Allinol fuel. Backed by Finn and Holley, they conspire against Axlerod's evil intentions. In the United Kingdom, Finn, Holley, and Mater devise a plan to infiltrate Axlerod's headquarters to uncover evidence that Allinol has been damaging the environment and caused the past incidents in the grand prix. They finally unmask their sinister intentions but everything derails when Mater discovers Kamiti planning to conduct huge explosions by running his super tank fueled by Allinol, which he plants to sabotage, however the villain plays a smart trick, the true enemy, a man covered in paint, steps out. In the chaos that ensues, Mater must use all he's learned from Finn and Holley in order to help the heroes escape safely with the real reason why they must be stopped: Allinol is not as environmentally friendly as Kamiti made it seem despite its potency and one so hazardous to human lives. To protect his friends and his new relationships, Mater joins forces with Finn, Holley, and even Ramone to thwart Kamiti's plans and bring an end to the evil schemes of Miles Axlerod. The final round of the World Grand Prix ultimately takes place at the Red Carpet in London with Mater arriving with Holley and the group stopping Axlerod and Kamiti before they carry out the sabotage. McQueen, along with his fellow racers who used the Allinol fuel source for the World Grand Prix is poisoned after consuming huge levels of it as Allinol is actually poisonous due to Kamiti hiding these hazards for his money. Holley disarms Axlerod while Finn and Mater trap Kamiti for further questioning. Mater ends up becoming a fan favorite amongst both the racers and spies, returning to Radiator Springs, welcomed back warmly by the rest of the population. Cars 2 explores various themes such as friendship, loyalty, and self-discovery. The story emphasizes the loyalty of Mater towards his friends at Radiator Springs as well as the risk he took by getting involved in the world of espionage. Mater and his friends demonstrate an unforgettable friendship that gets him out of a difficult situation he confronts. Cars 2's action-packed ride filled with twists, turns and turns that set up a unique crossover between cars and espionage that deliver many laughs and satisfy our love for our beloved characters, making Cars 2 an animated hit.
