Plot

In the midst of the glamorous era of Las Vegas in the early 1970s, the city's notorious Tangiers Casino represented the pinnacle of success and excess. At the helm of this lucrative establishment was Sam "Ace" Rothstein, a skilled and cunning sports handicapper, who had been handpicked by his powerful associates to steer the ship of the Tangiers into unprecedented prosperity. With his brilliant mind for numbers, coupled with his effortless charm and charisma, Ace was an ideal candidate to elevate the Tangiers to new heights. At first, Ace proves to be more than a worthy steward, displaying an uncanny ability to understand the intricacies of the Las Vegas landscape and deftly navigate the complex web of relationships between the city's prominent figures and the powerful crime syndicates that pulled the strings behind the scenes. His tenure at the Tangiers is marked by unprecedented growth and financial success, which, in turn, secures his reputation as one of the most prominent and respected figures in the world of high-stakes gaming. However, as the years go by, Ace's world becomes increasingly complicated, ensnared in a web of deceit, corruption, and the unpredictable consequences of his own tightrope diplomacy. His trusted but volatile enforcer, Nicky Santoro, poses an ever-present threat, embarking on a series of misguided and violent escapades that draw unwanted attention from law enforcement and more ominously, the full might of the Las Vegas underworld. Moreover, Ace's personal life becomes increasingly entwined with the chaos that surrounds him, particularly through his tumultuous relationship with his ex-hustler wife, Ginger, whose string of misadventures and self-destructive tendencies only serve to further destabilize Ace's life. Meanwhile, Ginger's con-artist ex, Lester Diamond, continues to manipulate and emotionally blackmail her, drawing in his destructive wake an assortment of scam artists, mobsters, and opportunistic characters, all seeking to extract a profit from the tumultuous and escalating drama that surrounds the Rothsteins. This twisted caboodle of characters threatens to engulf Ace's world, jeopardizing not only his reputation but also his life, as he struggles to maintain a semblance of control over the ever-turbulent landscape that is the Tangiers and its extended network of connections. As Ace navigates the treacherous waters of corruption, loyalty, and his own flawed moral compass, the line between vice and virtue continually blurs, rendering it increasingly difficult for him to separate reality from illusion. As the stakes continue to climb and Ace finds himself confronting the darker aspects of his world, his resolve is tested by the appearance of a rare glimmer of loyalty and redemption from an erstwhile antagonist, a rare and fleeting respite from the escalating chaos that threatens to overwhelm him. In the tumultuous world of the Tangiers, nothing is ever as it appears, and in this gripping narrative of high-stakes drama and corruption, Martin Scorsese brings to life the twisted underbelly of 1970s Las Vegas, generating a cinematic experience that masterfully conjures the eerie enchantment and devastating collapse of a luxurious world built on sand, amidst a cacophony of excesses, betrayals, and shattered illusions.

9.0/10. The secret to Vegas is keeping the customers coming back, gambling more, and losing more. Double betrayals of nobility and degradation, love and friendship – in this greedy, glittering world, there's nothing they won't do. Three hours of sheer coolness and fluency that feels like pure enjoyment, not tediousness, proving the deep script. Any fans of American gangster movies will die-hard love this film!

The biggest takeaway from this movie: a woman can't be indulged endlessly. Only those who love you and are virtuous are worth trusting. Beauty and elegance are qualities that only add value on that foundation. The movie's narrative is excellent; the three hours don't feel dull at all, and the narration is a great way to organize the plot, making it very pleasant to listen to. De Niro is dashing, Joe Pesci is his usual trouble maker, and Sharon Stone is perfect for playing a clueless harlot.

Even though it's three hours long, it doesn't feel that way when you're watching it.

Scorsese truly excels at crafting films like this. Makes you wonder if he wasn't involved in the mob himself in a past life, doesn't it?
