Plot

In the summer of 1986, a young couple, Andy Barclay and his mother Karen, are struggling to find a suitable Christmas gift for Andy. As fate would have it, a kind-hearted male store clerk, Bruce, takes an interest in Andy and recommends a state-of-the-art child's doll called "Chucky." Unbeknownst to Andy and his mother, Chucky is no ordinary doll, but rather the malevolent vessel for the soul of Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer with a penchant for violence. With the help of a voodoo spell, Ray successfully transfers his soul into the doll, Chucky. However, he is not the only supernatural force at play in the doll; Charles Lee Ray's voodoo sorcerer had set the doll with a self-revivification spell that Charles wasn't aware of. Karen and Andy return home, eager to unwrap their presents and begin the festive season. Unbeknownst to them, Chucky has gained sentience and has become aware of his new surroundings. Using his now-vast knowledge of childhood and terror to his advantage, Chucky masterfully manipulates Andy into believing that the doll is alive. The unsuspecting young boy falls for Chucky's tricks, treating the doll like a friend. Andy views Chucky as just a normal toy, completely unaware of the evil that the doll had resurrected into. As the events unfold, a gruff, seasoned homicide detective, Mike Norris, is enlisted to investigate the gruesome series of murders linked to the serial killer, Charlie Ray. It soon becomes apparent to Norris that Ray's voodoo sorcerer has resurrected the serial killer's soul into the doll Chucky. With this revelation, Norris sets out to find and disintegrate the malevolent spirit, knowing that the doll poses a grave threat not just to Barry but also to society. Meanwhile, Andy starts to notice strange occurrences surrounding Chucky, such as unsatisfiable violence, and these events lead him closer to the revelation that Chucky might not be just your average toy. As tensions escalate, Norris meets Karen and tries to comfort her by pointing out the doll might be responsible for the strange events happening. The turning point of the story lies when Andy befriends a new neighbor, a delightful young boy named Dale. Dale has a look of familiarity to him, and we soon come to learn his full-back horror story. Dale earlier killed by being thrown into furnance as well get close to being getting burned to death by Chucky. Andy's association with a more wholesome person like Dale serves as a contrast to Chucky's and brings out his genuine nature. At this point in the story, Andy begins to accept and connect the association between Chucky and the serial killer's case with a deeper comprehension, that Chucky is not a toy but rather an ill willed malevolent entity that has brought calamities on the household and killings to several people.
