Cleaner

Plot
In the midst of a sun-kissed city, 300 unsuspecting guests of an energy company's annual gala are brutally taken hostage by a group of radical activists, led by a charismatic figure known for their unwavering commitment to their cause. As chaos erupts within the edifice, one unlikely figure finds herself trapped in a precarious predicament - Alice Monroe, a former soldier turned humble window cleaner. Alice, suspended 50 storeys in the air on the outside of the skyscraper, finds herself trapped, unable to look away from the unfolding disaster unfolding mere metres from her precarious perch. The capture of the hostages sends shockwaves throughout the city, with the authorities scrambling to establish a dialogue with the captors, desperately seeking a peaceful resolution to the crisis. Meanwhile, Alice, clinging onto the side of the building for dear life, discovers that among the many terrified hostages are her younger brother, Charlie. The mere thought of his safety sends a surge of adrenaline coursing through her veins, fuelling her resolve to find a way to liberate Charlie and the others from the clutches of the fanatical activists. As she bravely surveys the unfolding chaos, Alice begins to devise a brilliant plan to save the hostages. Utilizing her unique window cleaning expertise, combined with her military training, Alice sets out to infiltrate the fortress-like building, intent on gathering vital intelligence on the terrorist's plans and infiltrating their inner sanctum. While Alice takes her time to devise a master plan, inside the besieged building, tensions reach a boiling point. Caught in a web of high-stakes negotiations, the hostages anxiously await their chance at freedom. Alice, silently observing from the shadows, exudes unwavering confidence and calm focus - her courageous resolve illuminating even the most darkest corners of the calamity. It becomes instantly apparent that the terrorists' true agenda goes far beyond a simple act of terrorism; they are out to demolish buildings on the construction site nearby without accounting for the human toll behind them. Realizing their plan, Alice prepares herself for a complex, multilayered rescue operation. Throughout the unfolding ordeal, Alice remains suspended above the maelstrom - a mysterious figure harnessed to the very edifice she's attempting to infiltrate. Undeterred by the treacherous height and harsh wind conditions, Alice defies her seemingly insurmountable odds to assemble an intricate strategy to steal past patrols, defeat her captors, and set Charlie free. As the night unfolds into a tense and heart-stopping climax, Alice fearlessly concocts and improvises amidst the turmoil. Her resourcefulness and grit ultimately empower her to devise a heart-stopping plan - an anti-climactic assault of guile on brutal bravado that succeeds where numerous attempts have failed. In a heart-stopping show of valor, Alice infiltrates the high-rise's upper floors, her cunning and cunning bravery allowing her to slip past patrols and siphon vital information from enemy hands. With precision and stealth, she navigates through an intricate network of surveillance systems, momentarily distracted guards, and collapsing smoke-filled hallways in pursuit of rescuing her dearly loved little brother. In a final act of defiance against the radicals' plans to demolish the cities new residential areas, Alice goes so far as to rescue as many precious hostages as she can. Faced with an exasperating mixture of fury and panic as she fights to secure Charlie and the many other innocent people caught up in this conflict of self-sacrifice, Alice proves her undying devotion to the lives of those she protects. Her unyielding courage shines brightly against the back drop of her wily battle with danger and uncertainty; an end in sight begins to form. In defiance of an otherwise guaranteed catastrophe, Alice, still clinging to the side of the high-rise with firm grip, manages to shatter the very framework that held the hostage crisis in check - freeing Charlie and numerous terrified civilians from the merciless grip of the terrorists. In the end, though battered, bruised, and wearied, Alice proves herself a resilient and selfless individual - inspiring awe at the seemingly inexplicable beauty of human resilience. Suspended high in the skyscraper's night sky, she realises her impossible quest has proven true. Her defiance against incredible danger defines the stark truth behind the unbreakable human spirit - standing firmly, unyielding and daring to shine for all who see her.

The fact that this unbearable, unwatchable trash wasn't "cleaned up" is an insult to its very name 😅. This girlboss flop was destined from the trailers. Daisy still thinks she can cash in on woke DEI benefits in this day and age – she's never going to recover. I used to feel sorry for her, but now it's just pathetic. And she's trying to exploit environmentalism this time? 🤣 Well, then she deserves to lose big.

The hero can beat up the villains but can't kill them off. The set-piece action is great, but the close-quarters combat is poorly designed. It always resorts to the tired trope of the villain dying because they talked too much and hesitated. If the main villain had just made his goals clear from the start and let others figure things out, this whole situation could have been avoided.

The final episode attempted to salvage the situation, and even featuring more close-ups of Ming-Na Wen couldn't rescue this unremarkable and terrible movie.

2.5 stars. Martin's filmmaking skills seem to be declining. The female lead has a decent presence, but the movie is too slow and cliché. Also, everything is trying to be a "strong female lead" film these days, but the execution falters. (Has Martin been making a lot of these "strong female lead" movies lately? None of them are particularly good.)

The opening is stunning, yet the plot becomes too oppressive. I'd rate it a solid 4 stars, but I ultimately gave up on it. As a foreign viewer, I'm more interested in seeing Ray Donovan's almost magical 'cleaner' life. But in the US, audiences seem to be more concerned with family values and ethical debates, with the 'cleaner' aspect just a facade. So, all those deep dives into drug addiction, adultery, Parkinson's, priest rape, a bitchy wife, a pixie-like mistress – they just became a burden for me.

The sheer volume of terrible movies lately is astounding, and each one seems to outdo the last in awfulness. Are these actors, who are actually recognizable names, all in debt like Cage, or did they sign some Draconian streaming contract while drunk, obligating them to churn out 100 films, no matter how bad? This is the kind of stuff that would have gotten you booed out of a video store back in the '90s...

If you're a fan of Daisy Ridley, this might be worth a watch. It's like a female-led "Die Hard" in some ways. The director's control over the visuals and overall style is decent. However, the plot is just too weak and formulaic. It feels outdated and the special effects are subpar, probably due to the low budget.

Even judged as the premiere episode of a new series, this feels overloaded with information. It's like the writers crammed the entire episode with character relationships without considering how bewildering it would be for new viewers. On top of that, the story itself isn't particularly captivating. I'd say it's pretty average overall.

The lead actor's face is a bit too chubby, and his clueless family members are frustrating to watch... Four stars for the actor's impressive physique, his decisive personality, his knack for solving other people's problems, the humor sprinkled throughout, and the tight, well-paced plot.
Nathan
He's got a system for cleaning up other people's messes, but his own life is a total disaster.
