Plot

Mike Duncan, a seasoned taxi driver, navigates the streets of Los Angeles at night, relying on his wits and experience to get by. It's a high-risk, high-reward job, and Mike has learned to be observant and adaptable to stay one step ahead. On this particular evening, Mike's fare is a well-dressed, confident, and charismatic individual who approaches his cab on a rainy Los Angeles night. The fare, Vincent, is a smooth talker who quickly takes a liking to Mike and strikes up a conversation. Vincent offers Mike $600 to drive him around the city for a few hours, which seems like a lucrative proposition, especially considering Mike's modest income and the fact that it's been a slow night. Vincent is charming and charismatic, and his genuine interest in Mike's life and experiences soon puts the taxi driver at ease. Mike accepts Vincent's offer and begins to chauffeur him around the city, engaging in small talk and learning more about Vincent's intentions. As the night wears on, Mike starts to notice that Vincent seems evasive and secretive about his business. Vincent repeatedly brushes off Mike's questions, and his demeanor becomes increasingly agitated and erratic. At first, Mike writes off these signs as a mere coincidence, attributing them to the stress and pressure of a high-stakes meeting. However, things take a darker turn when Mike witnesses Vincent gun down a businessman in a hotel corridor. Mike is shocked and horrified, realizing that he's been driving a hitman around the city all night. Vincent, still calm and collected, reassures Mike that he's not a threat and that what he's seen is merely a business arrangement. As Vincent continues to give Mike instructions on where to drive him, the taxi driver is torn between his desire for the $600 and his growing unease about the situation. Mike also begins to worry about the consequences of involving himself in Vincent's activities, fearing he might end up as a victim or become an accessory to murder. Vincent's seemingly insatiable desire for a tranquil nightcap adds to Mike's anxiety. Mike finds himself caught in a nightmare from which there's no escape, trapped with a cold-blooded killer in a city where he feels powerless to save lives. The stakes escalate when Vincent orders Mike to drive him to the nightclub where a CIA agent is scheduled to give an agent posing as a musician a package to reveal some classified information. In a moment of heightened panic, Mike decides to alert the nightclub's owner of Vincent's true nature but struggles to trust him and accept his advice. The plot unfolds with Mike desperately attempting to outsmart Vincent and end the night without further consequences. However, the more Mike tries to flee, the more he is drawn into Vincent's deadly world. As the body count rises, Mike finds himself forced to participate in Vincent's crimes, caught in a desperate game of cat and mouse with a ruthless hitman who will stop at nothing to complete his mission. Throughout the film, Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise deliver outstanding performances as Mike and Vincent, respectively. They present compelling portrayals of men who are locked in a silent struggle for survival in a high-stakes battle, pushed to their limits as Los Angeles rapidly descends into chaos around them. The script takes a philosophical turn, raising questions about the nature of moral responsibility and whether choices we make in the face of danger and uncertainty truly define us. "Collateral" explores themes of uncertainty, loneliness and desperation as two men fight to stay alive in a relentless pursuit that blurs the lines between crime and thriller elements. Based on these dynamics, and without a detailed account of local law and order agencies becoming aware of what's happening or a straightforward conclusion where the taxi is finally collected, the conflict simmers away, leaving the outcome in doubt until the end.
