Control Freak

Plot
In the supernatural comedy-horror film "Control Freak," a motivational speaker named Maya is living a seemingly picture-perfect life, inspiring millions with her powerful words and unwavering confidence. However, her facade begins to crack when she starts experiencing an inexplicable and uncontrollable itch on her scalp, which gradually grows in intensity and drives her to an absolute frenzy. From soothing creams to agonizing scalp massages, Maya resorts to every possible remedy to alleviate the itchy sensation, but nothing seems to provide her with the fleeting relief she craves. As the itch turns into an unrelenting torment, Maya finds herself plagued by memories of her childhood in a remote village in a rural African nation. It is during her village days that Maya's family and community were exploited by Western missionaries, and in her village days, Maya lost her family and friends. Her village, where a local medicine man unwittingly invoked malevolent spirits, was decimated following a catastrophic ritual intended to honor these entities. It is not long before Maya discovers the underlying cause of her incessant itch: she has become a host to an ancient parasitic demon, also known as an Aku, which has been awakened within her upon her return to America. According to her research, the Aku demon feeds on the victim's spiritual energy, progressing through various stages of its life cycle, triggered by trauma, inflicted pain, anxiety, and mental turmoil. Each progression takes away a piece of Maya's soul, infusing her with an aura of unexplained supernatural powers that start to wreak havoc on her life. Control Freak enters a world of fantasy as the Aku within Maya takes over, granting her incredible abilities - much to the fascination and concern of those who admire her. With her new powers, Maya gains the ability to perceive magical energies around her, manipulate objects and energies, and even afloat herself. On the one hand, Maya can appreciate a new sense of liberation from her uncharted past but on the other hand feels the loss of control over her own life while struggling endlessly with excruciating pain inflicted on her scalp. On the premise of rediscovering a home she unknowingly left behind to promote her image globally, Maya travels to Ghana and delves into her village's dark past. Maya learns that she needs to revisit her ancestral lands to seek spiritual cleansing based on ancient mystical knowledge from the tribal African healers. As she ventures further into the heart of darkness, Maya's efforts eventually drive her closer to taking full control over the Aku demon tormenting her from within. With each revelation of her ancestral heritage hidden deep within Ghana, She is reminded to recapture the life her long-departed ancestors had bestowed their love to. The film's pivotal plot twist arises when Maya finds herself engulfed by an onslaught of an assault made by countless spirits - each clamoring for her to avenge the wrongful wrong of their ancestral homeland, long since decimated by Western powers, who enslaved and profaned many along the way. Maya stands as a catalyst as she begins tapping into the energies from these vengeful spirits, unlocking powerful yet unpredictable powers. The Aku within her senses the energy brewing unbeknownst to Maya and strives to siphon the immense energy that is brewing within her. Having sensed an unease - much to her fury, Maya starts questioning if her well-intentioned motivations in assisting the spirits will, in reality, bring her closer to fully expelling the demon tormenting her existence. As Maya struggles with the supernatural transformation she undergoes and the moral ambiguity surrounding her role, Control Freak comes full circle, immersing viewers in its vivid exploration of past trauma, mental well-being, spirituality, and redemption. Engaging performances from its cast, paired with seamless direction from its helmer, ensure that Control Freak stays grounded and unique within the realm of supernatural comedies, while still embracing an edgy sense of spiritual warfare. By riding the fine line that walks the boundary between wondrous fantasy and unflinching horror, Control Freak serves as an incredible depiction of resilience in a life slowly reclaimed by wisdom and power - while refusing to let the demons govern one's choices anymore.

A singular and unconventional exploration of life's experiences.

Stretching a short story into a feature-length film only results in tedium and boredom. The premise of a brain itch gradually turning into a hole is a fantastic body horror concept, but the director's insistence on layering in family genetics and blood ties makes it feel cliche. The cross-temporal interaction is reminiscent of last year's "<Deadly AI>," but not as well executed. As for the wall-drilling, nighttime monster invasion, family discord, and using an infant as a buffer – just watch older movies. There's no need to waste time on this piecemeal film.

Curb that itch early, or you'll scratch your head bald. Is it Vietnam trauma turned hereditary psychosis, or self-discipline success tips driving a powerful woman mad? Turns out, it all boils down to a fear of childbirth : ) The "Three Ghosts" designs are kinda cute, and the sudden blood-soaked self-mutilation exorcism at the end is alright. It's just that the schizophrenic, ghost-seeing antics in the first half are so damn dull.
