Plot

Creed is a 2015 American sports drama film directed by Ryan Coogler, marking his feature film debut. The film serves as a spin-off and sequel to the Rocky film series, particularly focusing on the relationship between the former World Heavyweight Champion Rocky Balboa and Adonis Johnson, the son of his late friend and former rival Apollo Creed. With the return of Sylvester Stallone reprising his iconic role, the film explores the complexities of legacy, identity, and the unbreakable bond between a mentor and his protégé. The film introduces Adonis Johnson, the illegitimate son of Apollo Creed, who discovers his true heritage at the age of 21. Feeling disillusioned and disconnected from his celebrity father's legacy, Adonis sets out to find Rocky Balboa, Apollo's old friend and the man who once stood across from him in the ring. When he does, he finds a reclusive Rocky living in his Philadelphia home, training for one final fight before retirement. Initially, Rocky is unsure about taking on Adonis as a protégé, citing the devastating losses and emotional scars that come with competing at the highest level. However, as Adonis shows genuine passion and determination to follow in his father's footsteps, Rocky begins to see potential in the young fighter. Despite initial reservations, Rocky takes Adonis under his wing, teaching him the art of boxing and imparting valuable life lessons. Through their training sessions, Rocky helps Adonis understand the sacrifices that come with chasing greatness. He encourages Adonis to confront his troubled past and connect with his dead father's memory, not just as a celebrity figure but as a flesh-and-blood human being. Rocky's unorthodox training methods and his famous " go the distance" mantra serve as a catalyst for Adonis's growth, fostering a deep-seated understanding of his father's values, morals, and the lessons he imparted on the ring. Meanwhile, Adonis's relationship with his mother, Mary Anne Creed, and her controlling nature exposes the darker aspects of Apollo's life. The complexities of his father's celebrity status, the indulgent lifestyle surrounding it, and the shallow relationships sustained by it, gradually sink in for Adonis. This newfound understanding intensifies his desire to prove himself as a fighter in his own right and not just as Apollo Creed's son. As Adonis's journey progresses, he faces personal and professional setbacks, struggling to balance the pressure of his father's legacy with his own aspirations. However, under Rocky's guidance, he begins to develop a sense of self-worth and finds solace in the act of fighting. The transformation he undergoes, largely driven by his deepening respect for Rocky, humanizes Adonis and solidifies their bond. In parallel, Rocky's personal journey offers a poignant counterpoint to Adonis's story. Having won the World Heavyweight Championship and lost multiple times, Rocky struggles with finding motivation and meaning beyond the fame and adoration he once took for granted. His relationships with his wife, Adrian, and his son, Robert, are explored with greater depth, showcasing the quieter, more intimate aspects of the Rocky Balboa we've come to know and admire. Throughout the film, writer-director Ryan Coogler skillfully weaves together themes of legacy, identity, and redemption, crafting a narrative that honors the iconic characters of the Rocky series while simultaneously forging new paths forward. As Adonis embarks on his own path, the obstacles he faces serve as a bridge between his past, present, and future. Ultimately, Creed emerges as a poignant tribute to the characters and themes of the Rocky franchise, underscored by the inimitable presence of Sylvester Stallone.

Clichéd, yet sincere. Rocky lives on, now embodied in Creed.

Is this how a boxing movie should be made? Who cares if the story is a bit cliché – the most important thing is that it's electrifying! The director of this film is absolutely phenomenal!

This is what a motivational movie should be! The final boxing match perfectly embodies the "glorious defeat" spirit of Rocky, bringing tears to my eyes as the theme song plays. The emotional bond between Rocky and Creed, where they inspire each other, is the most genuine aspect of the film. Combined with the director's excellent control, it delivers a blood-and-tears anthem of struggle and resilience.

Compared to "100 Yen Love," this feels like an overly long Nike commercial... and a world champion with a beer belly? You've got to be kidding me.
