Creepshow

Plot

Creepshow, a 1982 horror anthology film directed by Stephen King and George A. Romero, pays homage to the macabre nature of classic '50s horror comics. The film's narrative is divided into five unique and unsettling tales, each with its own distinct tone and style. These interconnected stories blend elements of dark humor, the supernatural, and the grotesque, resulting in a cinematic experience that has become a cult classic. In the first segment, 'Father's Day,' an elderly man, Richard Vickers (played by Ted Danson), is brutally murdered by his daughter, Ellie (played by Jamie Lee Curtis), and her husband. The narrative takes an unusual turn when Richard's corpse emerges from the grave on Father's Day, every year, with increasingly gruesome and macabre intentions towards his daughter and her husband. Next up is 'The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill,' the second tale. This narrative is a comedic take on a meteor's fall from the sky. Jordy (played by Stephen King himself), a socially awkward and eccentric farmer, becomes infatuated with a meteorite that has landed on his property. Unbeknownst to Jordy, the falling meteor contains an otherworldly 'spittle' that begins to infect his body, causing an array of bizarre physical mutations and ultimately, a terrifying conclusion. The third and arguably most memorable segment, 'Something to Tide You Over,' is set on an isolated island. It revolves around Richard Vickers' son, Richard Jr. (played by Richard Lynch), a wealthy and arrogant man who's married to a woman named Elise (played by Leslie Nielsen). Unbeknownst to Elise, her husband is leading a double life and has plans for her downfall. He orchestrates a series of events that culminate in Elise becoming trapped in a precarious scenario, which ultimately results in her demise. Fourth on the list is the darkly comedic 'The Raft,' in which a group of five college students on a field trip to a local museum are involved in a deadly accident when their bus careens off the road and crashes onto a small island. Stranded on the island, the survivors soon find themselves hunted by an unseen, monstrous entity that stalks and kills them one by one in a chilling and suspenseful manner. Last but not least, 'They're Creeping Up On You' is the final tale. It's a twisted narrative centered around a wealthy and influential television presenter, Upwood (played by Joe Hill's father, Stephen's friend and fellow horror writer Joe Hill was also named but that is Joe Hill's father in the film) who suffers from an extreme fear of cockroaches and the insects they attract. Unbeknownst to Upwood, his apartment complex is infested with cockroaches that are drawn out of the citywide sewers due to his own eccentricities. As Upwood becomes increasingly unhinged and isolated from the outside world, the cockroaches multiply at an alarming rate, symbolizing his growing madness and desperation. Throughout Creepshow, the connections between the characters become increasingly tenuous, ultimately leading to a dark and unsettling climax. The interplay between the diverse narrative threads is handled with finesse by King and Romero, creating a rich and engaging horror experience that honors the spirit of classic comic book horror.
