The Crippled Avengers is a 1978 Hong Kong martial arts film directed by Chang Cheh and produced by Shaw Brothers. Set in a fictional China, the film revolves around a group of five men who were once skilled martial artists, all crippled by Tu Tin-To, a ruthless and cunning master, and his son. The story begins with a flashback that introduces the five avengers: Wang Chieh, a former Imperial Guardsman, Kao Feng, a skilled warrior with exceptional acrobatic abilities, Wang Hsieh, a master of sword techniques, Lee Yun, a former soldier with impressive spear fighting skills, and Chen Kuan, a skilled archer. All five men had been forced to leave their lives as martial artists behind after being grievously injured by Tu Tin-To and his son. Wang Hsieh, the group's leader, had his left leg amputated, Kao Feng his right arm, Lee Yun a broken leg, Chen Kuan two crippled legs, and Wang Chieh, a broken back which leaves him unable to move his lower body. Years later, the five crippled avengers have taken up a new life as traveling performers, all still nursing their grudges and seeking revenge against the man who destroyed their lives. They hear of Tu Tin-To's new apprentice, a ruthless young man known for his brutal fighting techniques. This sparks the idea that Tu Tin-To is once again spreading terror throughout the region. Without hesitation, the five avengers decide to set out on a mission to track down Tu Tin-To and avenge themselves against the man who crippled them for life. Led by Wang Hsieh, the group faces numerous obstacles as they embark on their perilous journey. Along the way, they learn that Tu Tin-To's latest apprentice is no ordinary young man; he is Tu Tin-To's own son, who is as skilled in the martial arts as his father. Upon learning the truth, the group's determination to exact revenge only grows stronger. As they near their destination, the crippled avengers begin to realize that their mission won't be easy; they will have to face not only Tu Tin-To's deadly fighting skills but also his ruthless and cunning nature. Furthermore, they must also contend with Tu Tin-To's own son, who seems eager to prove himself as a top martial artist in his own right. When the five avengers finally arrive at Tu Tin-To's location, they find themselves in a desperate battle to survive against the cruel master. In a dramatic and intense showdown, the group fights with everything they've got – using their unique abilities to their fullest potential, all while overcoming the limitations imposed by their injuries. Throughout the intense and thrilling fight scenes, the crippled avengers demonstrate their skill and determination in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. One of the standout scenes is when Wang Hsieh uses his impressive sword techniques to devastating effect despite being crippled. Another impressive moment occurs when Kao Feng, despite being an amputee, skillfully utilizes his agility and quick reflexes to overpower a pack of Tu Tin-To's henchmen. The fight scenes are interspersed with flashbacks of the five avengers' lives before their encounter with Tu Tin-To, serving to further underscore the extent of his cruelty and the depth of the avengers' pain and suffering. These flashback scenes add an even greater sense of emotional impact to the story, emphasizing the long-lasting effects of the avengers' crippling and their unrelenting thirst for revenge. Ultimately, the Crippled Avengers manages to triumph over their monstrous foes, and their leader Wang Hsieh is able to avenge himself against Tu Tin-To for the cruel injuries he inflicted. The final showdown is a testament to the group's unwavering camaraderie and determination to achieve their goal. The movie ends with the avengers finally finding closure through their hard-won victory. It serves as a testament to the enduring power of martial arts as a means of healing and redemption, not just a tool for destruction.
