Crocodylus

Plot
In the quaint Australian town of Billabong, a sense of unease hangs in the air like the scorching summer heat. It starts with a discovery by local farmer, James 'Jim' Douglas, who stumbles upon a massive, fossilized creature while working on his land. Initially, Jim thinks it's just an old relic, a dinosaur bone or something of that nature, but upon closer inspection, he realizes it's much more sinister. The object that catches his attention is a fossilized tripartite scute from a prehistoric animal known as Crocodylus, a long-lost cousin of the saltwater crocodile. This incredible find sets off a chain reaction that will unleash a terror unlike anything the town has ever seen. When news of the discovery reaches Dr. Evelyn Thompson, a renowned paleontologist from the University of Sydney, she is both fascinated and concerned. Her team is brought in to investigate the fossil, and upon examination, they confirm it's part of a Crocodylus skeleton, estimated to be over 60 million years old. The significance of this discovery is immense, as it was previously thought that the Crocodylus lineage had been extinct for millions of years. As news of the discovery spreads like wildfire, a sense of pride and curiosity sweeps through the townspeople. They can't wait to catch a glimpse of the beast's remains and learn more about the creature that once roamed the land. However, little do they know that the discovery has also awakened something primal and terrifying. According to Dr. Thompson, the tripartite scute, a unique structure found only on prehistoric crocodilians, was not just a random anomaly. It was a key component that held a sort of 'biological lock,' a mechanism that, when broken, could unleash a dormant genetic code within the Crocodylus species. The discovery, it seems, was the catalyst that shattered this lock, unleashing the creature's dormant DNA into the modern world. At first, the effects are subtlety, almost imperceptible. Livestock begins to disappear, and a few reported sightings of massive, scaly creatures in the nearby billabongs spark a mix of fear and skepticism. Jim's initial excitement quickly turns to dread as he begins to notice that the missing animals were all in the area where he found the fossil. He starts to suspect that the creature was indeed connected to the ancient remains. As the days pass, the number of reported sightings increases, and with it, the terror. The once-peaceful town is gripped by an unrelenting fear. People are now on edge, living in constant dread of being the next victim. The local police are baffled, with no concrete evidence to prove the existence of the creature. It seems as if the town is under siege by a monster from the depths of time. Dr. Thompson's team is torn between fascination and horror as they continue to study the ancient relic. They soon realize that the creature, now fully unleashed, is adapting at an alarming rate. It's growing larger, stronger, and more aggressive with each passing day. They also discover that the Crocodylus is capable of surviving out of its natural environment for extended periods, feeding on a wide variety of prey, including livestock, wild game, and even humans. As the situation spirals out of control, Jim finds himself at the forefront of the battle against the creature. Armed with his local knowledge and an unwavering determination, he sets out to confront the monster, knowing that he may be the only one who can stop it. Dr. Thompson's team is in a state of chaos, struggling to keep up with the creature's rapid evolution. They are faced with an unprecedented challenge, as the line between science and horror blurs. In the midst of this chaos, Jim uncovers a terrifying truth. The creature's ability to adapt and evolve is not a natural phenomenon, but rather a result of the genetic code being manipulated by an unknown force, possibly an alien civilization. The true intentions behind this are shrouded in mystery, leaving Jim and his allies with a daunting task: to stop the creature before it's too late and possibly prevent further genetic tampering. The fate of Billabong hangs in the balance as Jim, the paleontologists, and the townspeople band together to fight for survival. They must use all their resources, from scientific knowledge to brute force, to take down the monster and restore peace to their shattered world. But as they face the primal terror that has been unleashed, they realize that the true enemy may not be the creature itself, but the dark forces that have awakened it, threatening to unleash a horror beyond comprehension. As the battle between man and beast reaches its climax, one thing becomes clear: the ancient secret unearthed by Jim Douglas has set in motion a deadly chain reaction, and the true cost of playing with nature's most primal forces may be too high to pay. Will anyone be able to stop the terror that has been unleashed, or will the people of Billabong be forever trapped in the heart of darkness? The outcome remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: nothing will ever be the same again in the shadows of the prehistoric monster, Crocodylus.

A Southeast Asian spin on *The Trails of Blood*, though who can truly capture the essence of familial harm – the desperate yearning for an innate "love" that simply doesn't exist – within a concise film? What we see are control and horror, but not much beyond that. The reality-bending, almost fantastical climax ultimately leaves a sense of oppressive frustration.

This is a story about a sexually repressed mama's boy who resembles Ertai, and his monstrous, controlling mother. The film has some visually interesting ideas, but the themes feel a bit outdated. However, considering the principle that the economic base determines the superstructure... Southeast Asian cinema is probably just about the right amount of "outdated" for now.
