Deadpool 2 picks up where the first film left off, with Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), living a life of chaos and mischief as a mercenary for hire. However, his antics have taken a toll on his relationships, particularly with Vanessa (Morena Baccarin), the love of his life, who is struggling to cope with the physical and emotional scars inflicted upon her by Wilson's enemies. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to Russell Collins, a young mutant with the ability to absorb and redirect energy. Russell's powers are first exemplified when, after watching his abusive father punish him endlessly, Russell exacts revenge with a burst of telekinetic energy that causes the house to erupt into flames. Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead, two mutants from the X-Force, intervene to help Russell escape from the law, which has labeled him a threat due to his unpredictable abilities. However, their actions inadvertently draw attention from Cable (Josh Brolin), the infamous time-traveling mutant from a dystopian future. Cable is on a mission to travel back in time to the present day and prevent Russell from becoming a powerful villain known as "Nathan Summers," who will grow up to wreak havoc on the future and seal the fate of the world's mutants. In Cable's past, Nathan was almost destroyed by a devastating attack on the surviving mutants who hid him in a space-bound spacecraft; the attack was known as the New Mutants massacre. Now, in the present, Cable sees Russell as the catalyst for the events he is attempting to prevent, and he has a singular focus on eliminating him. Deadpool becomes embroiled in this conflict, largely due to a young mutant named Firefist, who is working under Cable and seems initially willing to follow orders without question. However, under further examination, Firefist starts displaying some strange characteristics that lead Deadpool to suspect he's also a product of Russell's legacy, with skills that mirror Russell's. This notion sets off a series of humorous and explosive confrontations as Wade forms an alliance with Russell, mainly driven by their shared drive for survival and need to keep their eyes on the powerful time-traveler, Cable. Working together, Deadpool and Russell fight against the rogue agency known as the X-Force, with the shared goal of freeing Nathan from Cable's influence. Wade faces off against Josh, the agent from the powerful organization known for selecting talented mutants to do their bidding. However, Deadpool's wits, combined with his chaotic fighting style, allow the duo to stay one step ahead of Josh's persistent attempts to apprehend the two through deadly tactics, creating plenty of entertaining action and spectacular nonchalance. Upon discovering Cable is his friend too, Deadpool resorts to going head to head against him, particularly in a chaotic subway sequence that ultimately results in Cable capturing the X-Force team's Black Tom to acquire the research that Cable needs to use Nathan's powers to maintain control over Nathan. Cable is attempting to isolate Nathan using a product called the concentration and amplification serum that the organization has researched. Their respective battles are woven artfully into the narrative of the movie, as Wade becomes more conscious of his human side and his place as a role model for mutants around the world. These vignettes are paired with introspective moments as Wilson struggles with balancing his penchant for violence against the fragility and resilience of others, particularly Vanessa and his young ally Nathan. We find ourselves diving into the darkest and more introspective era in the universe of Deadpool as the stakes become evermore increased when, Cable attempts to implement his dystopian vision of using Nathan as the catalyst to exterminate humans with the ultimate goal of establishing a mutant society. Wade sees this outcome as gravely unjust as he asks rhetorical questions about whether survival means "merely existing"; then proceeds to explore with this theme with Cable. Deadpool ultimately decides to intervene by finding Nathan, a battle fraught with complications as Nathan starts acting more erratically, raising questions of his fate and where this event could lead to from a logical standpoint. This conundrum, alongside doubts and introspection, makes a logical but flawed decision from Cable against his inherent moral code to instate more stability throughout the universe through death seem all the more questionable. The film ends on a surprisingly reflective note as we see how and what goes on behind the battle filled scenes, showcasing the delicate, transformative bond between Deadpool and Nathan, all against Cable's overwhelming ambition to start his revolution by the lethal serum that will change the course of history. The final scenes convey the emotional journey undergone by Wade as he contemplates the darker side of his existence and rediscovers the notion of what truly makes him alive - friendship, mutual love, and hope for the future.
