Death Wish 4: The Crackdown

Plot

Death Wish 4: The Crackdown is a 1987 American vigilante film directed by J. Lee Thompson, and it is the fourth installment in the Death Wish film series, which began with Charles Bronson's portrayal of Paul Kersey, a regular man who turned into a ruthless vigilante after a brutal home invasion left his wife and daughter dead. In this film, Bronson once again dons the role of Kersey, who has become disillusioned with his previous life as a vigilante and has relocated to California. However, after his girlfriend, Amy (Gayle Hunnicutt), discovers that Amy's daughter has struggled in life and eventually died from an accidental cocaine overdose, Kersey is spurred back into action. Fueled by his grief and anger, Kersey decides to seek out those responsible for the girl's death - a group of notorious local drug dealers and smugglers who have been terrorizing the city. Kersey quickly learns that the source of the drug menace lies with a charismatic and ruthless gangster named Vincent Tubbs, played by Camille Keenan, who has been evading the authorities for quite some time. Tubbs has amassed wealth and influence by running a vast network of street gangs and smuggling operations, all with the intention of flooding the streets with his product, regardless of the cost to the innocent. Upon arriving in California, Kersey finds himself at odds with both Tubbs and the ruthless local gangsters, but also at odds with the police department, who are more interested in covering up their own corruption than rooting out the genuine source of the problem. As Kersey wages war against the cartel, he soon discovers that Tubbs is being aided by a corrupt police officer, and his motives extend far beyond simple profit. The city teeters on the brink of chaos as Kersey becomes more and more brazen in his pursuit of justice. Tubbs unleashes his goons to capture and kill Kersey, but the latter always seems one step ahead, meting out brutal justice with a mixture of swift knife slashes and brutal fists. Tubbs's goons, including his henchmen, and a rival gang try to take him down, but they are all ultimately thwarted by Kersey's vigilantism. Kersey's war on the cartel becomes increasingly personal. As one of Tubbs's goons, known as the "Butcher," is left maimed following their encounter, Kersey starts to gain a degree of fear within the cartel. As the body count rises, and his actions become less covert, Kersey becomes increasingly embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game of espionage and deception against Tubbs and his loyalists. The tension builds as the film hurtles towards its climax, set against a backdrop of crime-scene tapes and police sirens blaring outside, as Kersey takes on the corrupt system that allowed the drug menace to grow. With an explosion of gunpowder and blood, Kersey ultimately exacts a devastating revenge upon the cartel, taking out several key members, including the treacherous "Butcher," with his trademark precision and skill. In the aftermath of the bloodbath, Kersey rides off into the night, leaving a trail of carnage and destruction in his wake. Though his actions leave many dead and wounded, Kersey has brought justice to the victims and their families, and in doing so, has redeemed himself in the eyes of his girlfriend, Amy.
