Plot
In "Deep Rising," a group of ruthless hijackers, led by a cunning and violent mastermind named Finley (Treat Williams), set their sights on the luxurious ocean liner SS Andrea Doria. The crew and passengers are unaware of the impending doom that awaits them as Finley's team boards the ship with the intention of stealing its vast fortune. As the hijackers begin to wreak havoc, a strange phenomenon occurs - a series of massive, tentacled sea creatures emerge from the depths of the ocean, attracted by the commotion. These terrifying behemoths, which come to be known as "Tentacled Abominations," are drawn to the ship and its occupants. As chaos erupts on board, Finley's crew finds themselves facing off against not only each other but also the monstrous sea creatures. The hijackers' plans for a quick getaway are quickly foiled as they become trapped in a desperate battle for survival. One of the few passengers who is aware of the impending danger is a group of marine biologists and deep-sea explorers, led by the fearless and resourceful Jo (Famke Janssen). They soon find themselves at the forefront of the fight against the sea monsters, using their knowledge of the ocean's depths to try and outsmart the creatures. As the ship becomes a battleground, Finley's crew is gradually picked off one by one, and it becomes clear that the only way for them to survive is to work together with the passengers. Amidst the chaos and destruction, unexpected alliances are formed, and Finley's true intentions are revealed. In this intense, action-packed thriller, "Deep Rising" takes viewers on a heart-pumping ride through the depths of the ocean, where humans are forced to confront their own mortality and the fury of nature. Blending Chinese elements with action and disaster genres, this film primarily follows the adventure formula. Bearing Disney's signature style, it's reminiscent of the director's later work on "The Mummy" series. This movie feels like Disney's response to the "Titanic" craze back then. The atmosphere is well-crafted, and the practical effects like sets and models are a refreshing change from CGI backgrounds. The supporting characters are well-developed, and the ending offers a delightful surprise with its carefree spirit.
