Demon City

Demon City

Plot

In a crime-ridden metropolis, the lines between good and evil have become increasingly blurred. Behind the layers of corrupt politics and violence, a more sinister force lurks in the shadows: power-hungry individuals hiding behind elaborate disguises and grotesque masks have taken control of the once-great city. They rule with an iron fist, unchallenged and feared by the inhabitants. Enter our protagonist, Jack Harris, the unwitting anti-hero who stumbles into a world where he has no choice but to fight for survival. Once a skilled and calculating hitman, Jack has managed to escape his dark past and leave his services for hire in the past. However, fate has other plans for him. Framed for the brutal murder of his own family on the day of their vacation in a resort known as Demon City, a haunted resort town with a rich crime fiction history that earned its name after a previous gang invasion broke everything that was functional. Convinced that one of his former colleagues has orchestrated this heinous act, Jack is left for dead in the heart of the city. Yet, as he finds himself succumbing to the cruel conditions that await him in the city's morgue, something sparks within him – vengeance. His painful survival serves as a fire that fuels his next and most important mission: exacting revenge upon the masked impostors known merely as "the demons," responsible for his family's merciless murder and his own impending doom. Not even the ominous nature of the otherworldly tone lurking within Demon City can dislodge the steel determination Jack has ignited within his own heart. With each falling step as he stumbles out of the morgue, you can observe the transformation from his prior melancholic and depressed state shift to a desperate, hell-bent mentality, making every dark event that unfolded only make the spirit which is burning inside of him more empowered. Hunt for the mastermind and finding more information could help him begin to uncover the string of deception. Then, he swiftly discovered that beneath the sinister network of individuals masquerading as demons is a much deeper darker history embedded deep with the heart of Demon City itself – built in previous decades with decades of corruption, malice, and control which has risen over the generations producing today's wicked power structure. Little by little, he discovers there was not only a single band of people, but an intricate hierarchy leading to one malevolent figure after whom his personal conflict revolves.

A mindless, action-packed thrill ride! Constant fighting and killing at a speed so breakneck you can barely keep up – *this* is how assassins should be! It's basically a gender-swapped *Kill Bill*. A shame they wasted the creepy Masked Clan's netherworld vibe. Having the daughter take out one of the twins to complete the cycle... you can see Netflix really wracking their brains to cash in on the female empowerment trend. Two stars go to Toma Ikuta; even just the sheer intensity in his eyes could devour the villains whole. Such dedication to this movie! He really committed, even if the movie is a trainwreck.

Is Masahiro Higashide playing a role very close to his real self?

Forced "resurrection," forced invincibility, forced silence—Demon City feels like an awkward mix of Silent Night and John Wick. Despite the abundance of action sequences, the fight choreography is shockingly bad. The entire script is so simplistic it's virtually devoid of any tension or narrative arc. And the decision to bring in Tomoyasu Hotei for the score is utterly baffling.
