Diablo

Plot

Diablo is a 1986 American drama film directed by Reginald Hudlin. The movie is set in the 1940s and revolves around the life of Ben Williams, a man who has recently been released from prison after serving a year for a crime he did not commit. Upon his release, Ben finds himself struggling to adjust to the harsh realities of life outside the prison walls. He is aided by Bill Foster, a moral and principled lawyer who believes in rehabilitation rather than just punishment. Bill decides to take Ben under his wing and helps him find a job, get back on his feet, and also connect with his estranged family, including his daughter, Lynn. However, things take a turn when Ben is convinced that his release is not meant to be. He is given a $10,000 check by Bill Foster as a token of friendship, but this check sets him on a mission to clear up a terrible injustice that haunts his past. It begins to unravel as a web of deceit is slowly exposed. Ever since Ben's release, there have been rumors and whispers about his possible implication in a crime he claims he never committed. These speculations are largely fueled by his past history and the suspicions surrounding his mother, who has long been a recluse. One rumor floating around implies that Ben's stepfather did it and Ben fled the crime. Ben decides to expose the dark truth about the crime that tarnished his mother's and his name. Fear starts to grip him as the truth unravels slowly. His name and the reputation of his mother, begin to come back into question when revelations are made linking both of them to the big crime scene of that dreadful night. Ben's decision to unravel the mystery and to expose the wrong perpetrator starts him on a treacherous path that includes danger and uncertainty at every step. Every new revelation puts him deeper into trouble, largely in fear of punishment and death. Determined to uncover the truth, Ben starts to collaborate with some brave and resourceful individuals, Bill being one, to investigate his past and to find out the veracity of every rumor being spread about him and his family. As we follow the protagonist in this gripping tale of conflict and deception, we come to realize that Diablo is definitely not just about its gripping mystery, but also the intense character study, expertly conveyed through a poignant and powerful story line that, given the atmospheric setting of a bygone era, makes for a movie experience unlike any other. As the series of events keep stacking and evolving, tension builds up steadily and Ben starts to realize that, though every step he takes puts him in grave danger, he might be bringing down a house of cards in his pursuit of justice and redemption. The gripping drama reaches a climax as we uncover the secrets of Diablo's mysterious world. Diablo showcases gripping performances from Charles Bronson in the title role, alongside Ed Begley, Blanche Baker, and Jorge Rivera in pivotal roles. The gritty portrayal, intricate screenplay, coupled with an uplifting narrative line holds the entire narrative in an interesting spell and delivers an emotionally charged movie experience.
