Dirty Heroes

Dirty Heroes, released in 1948, is a World War II action-adventure film directed by Sam Newfield. The movie takes place in the Netherlands near the end of the war in 1945. It follows a group of ex-convicts who are unexpectedly recruited by the U.S. Army for a hazardous mission. The story begins with our protagonist, Bill 'The Kid' Jenkins, played by Johnny Mack Brown, an ex-convict with a rough past. Bill is released from a U.S. Army prison camp after being pardoned to join the Allied forces in their fight against the Nazis. At the prison camp, he forms close bonds with other prisoners who also have unique skills that could be useful in future missions. These prisoners include Jack 'The Kid' Murphy, an expert marksman; Joe, a skilled engineer; Dutch, a charming and resourceful individual with knowledge of the area; Bill 'The Bull' Anderson, a tough and intimidating enforcer; Dutch's cousin, Mike, a talented thief; and lastly, 'Lucky' Larry, a skilled card player with many talents. After Bill is released, he gets in contact with his ex-con friends and plans to bring them along for the U.S. Army's new mission in the Netherlands. The primary goal of the U.S. Army is to retrieve valuable Dutch jewels originally stolen by the Nazis during the occupation. This mission becomes complicated when word spreads that these jewels may be used to fund the Nazi war effort and could potentially prolong the conflict. Moreover, there's also news about confidential Allied military plans that were confiscated by the Nazis and are hidden in a heavily guarded Dutch fortress. Given their unique skills, the U.S. Army decides to form a team with the ex-prisoners and recruit them for this perilous mission. Their commander, Captain Martin, assigns them the codename 'Dirty Heroes'. Their mission is two-fold: one is to recover the Dutch jewels while the other is to get hold of the valuable Allied documents to prevent the enemy from getting their hands on them. With their objectives in mind, the group embarks on a challenging adventure that spans across the Netherlands. Along the way, they use their skills to navigate through the treacherous terrain, encountering fierce resistance from the Germans, the Nazis' Dutch collaborators and even from within. They are also tasked to infiltrate and gather information from German-occupied territories, making contact with Dutch resistance fighters to further achieve their objectives. On their path to success, the 'Dirty Heroes' must put their faith in their new leader, Bill. Bill leads the team through some intense and often precarious moments in the Netherlands, where the team often finds themselves right in the middle of battles between the U.S. Army forces and the German army. Meanwhile, a romantic subplot emerges between Bill and a woman named Annie, who turns out to be a Dutch resistance fighter. Her presence further complicates their efforts, adding pressure and emotional challenges on the mission. As they near the Dutch fortress where the jewels and confidential documents are kept, the team is met with resistance from the German soldiers, who will stop at nothing to prevent the Allied forces from achieving their objectives. In the final showdown, the 'Dirty Heroes' use all their skills and teamwork to gain access to the heavily guarded fortress and retrieve the documents and the valuable Dutch jewels. Upon returning, they are celebrated as heroes.
