Doctor X

Plot

In the 1932 film "Doctor X", a renowned pathologist, Dr. Henry Clavering (played by Lionel Barrymore), is on the hunt for a serial killer known as the Moon Killer, who has been terrorizing New York City. Clavering's reputation and sanity are threatened when he becomes obsessed with solving the case. Meanwhile, a wisecracking reporter, Ivan Torrance (played by Lee Tracy), stumbles upon Clavering's research and sees an opportunity to get the scoop of a lifetime. Despite Clavering's initial reluctance, Torrance convinces him to let him tag along on his investigation in exchange for exclusive access. As they delve deeper into the case, the unlikely duo encounters a cast of suspicious characters, including a mysterious woman (played by Fay Wray) with a possible connection to the Moon Killer. Through a series of twists and turns, Torrance's sharp instincts and Clavering's medical expertise help them narrow down the list of suspects. As the body count rises, Clavering's obsession with the case begins to take a toll on his mental health, causing him to question his own sanity. Torrance, however, remains steadfast in his pursuit of the truth, using his quick wit and journalistic instincts to stay one step ahead of the killer. In the end, "Doctor X" is a gripping tale of mystery, suspense, and the blurred lines between science and madness. The film's blend of humor, drama, and horror elements makes it a classic of its era, showcasing the talents of Barrymore and Tracy in memorable performances.

I'm giving this a reluctant 3-star rating, purely out of loyalty to Ryoko Yonekura and Yuki Uchida, and my decade-long dedication to the series. As for the plot... it's genuinely hard to even comment on. And honestly, can they *please* stop casting unattractive men in lead roles? All those close-ups were just nauseating.

Okay, here's a translation that captures the nuances of your review, including the frustration and love for the city gate: "Thank goodness for the subtitle glasses; at least I could follow the plot. But seriously, the storyline was awful. The forced organ transplant by Daimon felt so out of the blue. And the crying Japanese patient next to him? I just couldn't grasp it. The ending was infuriating! Still, the city gate was so beautiful as always! City gate is the best!"

This film has all the makings of a thrilling mystery, but somehow manages to outdo itself with its absurdity. A wisecracking reporter and a brilliant scientist team up, only to make things more complicated by introducing a Moon Killer that feels like it stepped straight out of a campy '70s sci-fi flick. If you're into quirky, over-the-top suspense, this one delivers!
