Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku

Plot
In the midst of a desolate, war-torn landscape, Bardock, a low-ranking Saiyan soldier, trudges through the remnants of a world he has just ravaged. His mission, on the orders of Frieza, has been to eradicate the inhabitants of a planet in a distant corner of the universe. With a team of his fellow Saiyans, Bardock brutally executes the final stages of their mission, crushing the last pockets of resistance and claiming victory. However, just as he is about to depart the devastated planet, a figure emerges from the shadows. A wise, aged being - who bears an uncanny resemblance to the planet itself - greets Bardock with a prophetic warning. Utilizing a mysterious, planet-based energy known as a "Ki," this being bestows upon Bardock an extraordinary gift – the ability to see into the future. He reveals to Bardock that his own kind is on the brink of destruction, foretold by a terrible battle to come at the hands of Frieza, an alien warlord notorious for his merciless slaughter of entire planets. At first, Bardock dismisses this warning as mere fantasy, unsure how to take it seriously. However, as he recalls Frieza's outrageous offer to him and other Saiyans – to conquer and destroy countless worlds in exchange for unimaginable wealth and power – a haunting sense of foreboding crystallizes within him. Frieza's plan to incinerate the Saiyan people and ultimately discover the potential of the legendary Super Saiyan becomes disturbingly clear to Bardock. The burden of foresight weighs heavily upon Bardock, now burdened by an unwelcome realization of his part in the unfolding catastrophe. Desperate to save his own kind from the slaughter that awaits them, he frantically attempts to sound the alarm. His failure to convince Frieza of the danger head-on, due to the latter's perceived strength and powers, underscores Bardock's unrelenting determination to see this through. With a renewed sense of purpose, Bardock embarks on a perilous journey to find his son, Kakarot, also known as Goku, an impressionable, Saiyan warrior whose future is uncertain. Believing that Kakarot may possess potential, even if only in the form of extraordinary strength, Bardock sends Kakarot's earliest memories imbued with the spirit of his people through psychic transmission, planting a glimmer of faint hope. Finding Kakarot and his family, the Gohanans, on Earth, Bardock gradually unravels a glimmer of understanding regarding the origins of the bond between this would-be potential warrior, a nameless infant, whose early gifts would seemingly grow more and more incredible in mere days. As their relationship develops, they face a relentless enemy army, ultimately succumbing to the wrath of Frieza's relentless campaign to annihilate any sign of resistance. Watching in awe and devastation as Frieza remorselessly casts his spell of destruction, with little hope for interference, Bardock's existence on planet Earth is defined by sorrow and dismay - crushed by the devastating loss of almost every member of his family. His once carefree existence now bittersweetly replaced by eternal dread.

The sincerity is definitely there. It's much better than I expected as a rehash. The music, fights, and visuals are all quite good. However, this special completely subverts the established Dragon Ball world-building of the past decade or so! Bardock suddenly goes from a tragic, heroic figure to an ancestor of the Saiyans. Kakarot also leaps from being "the son of a low-class warrior who trained to become the strongest man in the universe" to "the heir of a pure Saiyan bloodline who trained to become the strongest man in the universe."
