Eddie the Eagle

Plot

In the midst of a bleak winter landscape, where the snow-covered mountains seem to stretch up to the sky, Michael "Eddie" Edwards (played by Taron Egerton) is an unassuming figure. A young man with a wide grin and an unwavering determination, Eddie is an unlikely candidate to take on the mighty world of ski-jumping. Growing up in Cheltenham, a small town in England, Eddie's family is not particularly athletic, but they do share his unwavering enthusiasm for life. Eddie's father, Edwin (played by Keith Allen), a loving father figure who owns a used car dealership, and his mother, Cynthia (played by Jo Hartley), a devoted homemaker and mother, encourage Eddie's unique spirit, but they also understand the harsh realities of the world they live in. Eddie's earliest memories are of watching ski-jumping competitions on television, mesmerized by the skill and bravery of the athletes performing daring leaps in the mountains. He becomes obsessed with the idea of representing Great Britain in the Winter Olympics, and he devotes every waking moment to mastering the art of ski-jumping. However, his parents and teachers dismiss his ambitions, advising him to focus on something more practical and secure. They worry that he is being unrealistic, that he's just a small-town boy with no chance of ever making it to the Olympics. Determined to prove them all wrong, Eddie sets out to find a coach who will believe in him. He travels from town to town, visiting every ski club and resort, searching for someone who will see the potential in him. His perseverance pays off when he meets Bronson Peak (played by Hugh Jackman), a rebellious and charismatic coach with a reputation for pushing his athletes to the limit. Bronson is an unconventional coach who has been banned from competing in the Olympics, but he still has a passion for the sport. He's been living in exile, far from the spotlight, and sees something in Eddie that no one else does - the fire in his belly, the conviction in his eyes. Bronson recognizes that Eddie has the heart of a true athlete, and he agrees to take him on, despite the doubts of the British Ski Association. Under Bronson's guidance, Eddie throws himself into training, pouring every ounce of energy and determination into mastering the art of ski-jumping. Bronson pushes him to his limits, forcing him to confront his fears and doubts, but he also instills in him a newfound confidence and self-belief. As the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics approach, Eddie faces increasing pressure from the British establishment, who dismiss him as a novelty act, a joke. The media portrays him as a plucky underdog, a feel-good story to distract from the politics and scandals of the Olympics. However, Eddie is no joke, and he is determined to prove himself, to show the world that he is more than just a novelty act. The night before the competition, Eddie's family and friends gather at his hotel, anxious and worried. They know the odds are against him, and they fear the worst. But Eddie is undaunted. He stands tall, his eyes shining with determination, and he tells them, "I'm going to go out there and make a noise." And that's exactly what he does. The day of the competition arrives, and Eddie takes to the slopes, his heart pounding with excitement and nerves. He soars through the air, his skis flying high above the snow-covered mountain, as the crowd screams and cheers. It's a moment of pure exhilaration, a testament to the power of human spirit. Eddie's showing at the Olympics is a historic moment, a turning point in his life. He makes the qualifying rounds, and in the process, he captures the hearts of the nation. The crowd roars with approval, chanting his name, as he stands on the podium, a symbol of British pride and perseverance. The film ends with Eddie standing on the Olympic podium, his arms raised in triumph, a medal of bronze around his neck. It's a moment of pure elation, a testament to the power of believing in oneself, even in the face of overwhelming adversity. Eddie has made a noise, and in doing so, he has inspired a generation of young people to follow their dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem.
