Elysium

Plot

In the year 2154, humanity had faced extinction in the aftermath of a global nuclear catastrophe that ravaged the Earth. A concerted effort led by a coalition of scientists and engineers resulted in the creation of Elysium, a self-sustaining, man-made space station designed to be a utopian oasis where the world's elite could live in opulence and safety. Elysium, with its lush gardens and pristine architecture, stood in stark contrast to the desolate wasteland that was Earth. As the Earth's population struggled to survive in an ever-changing, toxic environment, the divide between the two societies grew insurmountable. On one side, there were the affluent citizens of Elysium, who reveled in their luxurious lifestyle, technological advancements, and supposedly 'perfect' society. They lived without worries of poverty, hunger, disease, or death, their days filled with leisure activities, entertainment, and science. On the other, the massive population of the underprivileged, overpopulated, disease-ridden, and severely poverty-stricken Earth lived a hardscrabble existence. The government of Elysium took great pains to preserve their exclusive status through highly rigid and intrusive immigration laws that effectively made Earth's residents second-class citizens. Elysium's artificially intelligent security system, Delta-V, was an unwavering army of autonomous lethal drones designed to ruthlessly defend the space station from any would-be infiltrators. Meanwhile, in the midst of this dichotomy, a man named Max De Costa found himself caught in a desperate fight for his life. Working as a former car thief, the gravely injured Max is shot by an immigration enforcement officer and subsequently found by a ragtag group of revolutionaries who vowed to bring about change to the status quo. Among the rebel leaders is Frederic, a former scientist with knowledge of Elysium's systems and their connection to the mainframe via a man named Kruger. Max learns from them about a highly classified program called 'Project 3001.' It is an operation aimed at rejuvenating and making human life indefinitely longer, even saving any type of internal wound by transfiguring them. Understanding the potential of rejuvenation (the system known as "Medbay One" was designed to effectively heal his gunshot wounds and replace his short life expectancy for much longer one), Max poses an ultimatum to Frederic: deliver himself to Elysium and take advantage of a secret program meant for those willing to risk an accelerated death. Convinced by this persuasive and deadly promise, Max enters an exclusive offer and agrees to participate in the daring "Project 3001." Elysium's authorities, however, wanted nothing more than to keep those with access to Medbay One out of Elysium until they have taken millions of dollars. Hence, Max effectively crossed his ultimate line by deciding to join Project 3001 in order to avoid premature death. Because he was on the run, during all these negotiations, the 'powerful regime' revealed their ruthless underbelly as enforcement demanded the full capture of those who could not easily and effectively accomplish it: the very rebels attempting to save a young thief's life. Because of his rebellious past, Max was chosen to be enlisted in the project with Max carrying nearly lethal health, only capable of living thirty minutes at a time, and he underwent repeated, painful medical tests and then allowed, for some brief months to accomplish a top-secret spying mission. With his newfound capabilities paired with his deep knowledge of the inner workings of Elysium, they were to execute a daring Plan: obtain crucial information and reach the Medbay - they did this with a certain ease, and the thief outsmarted all involved groups one by one in this perilous mission devised by Elysium's merciless rulers. As the new infiltrating "super spy", he starts going on an intimate mission tasked by the key proponent behind Elysium and its "wonder" tech - Kruger & Maximilian - The one that stands behind the brutal propaganda in Elysium - Secretary Dylan Rhodes - In the middle of endless struggle Max somehow manages his initial goals not through, not taking power, but instead and for love, delivering those with deadly conditions and injuries. Until realizing that the master plan behind this set of ambitious affairs lay not just around an elaborate experiment on society, but about powerful agents. When Max receives word of his sister's severe respiratory condition and her near-limited time left as it was decided by her doctor's order, there is not much left to do other than accepting hard-labor risk in the future with the entire fate not sure.

A complete waste of time, just awful. Stiff, derivative, and feels like a cheap knock-off filled with plot holes. Seriously wanted to strangle that mother and daughter alongside turning off that goddamn score.

A film reflecting the plight of ordinary people struggling with unaffordable and inaccessible healthcare.

Extremely political. In 2154, the USA has become Mexico, and Elysium has become the USA. Although the ending is overly idealistic, it's arguably the most unsubtle immigration reform propaganda in history.
