Extraction

Plot

Extraction is a 2020 action-thriller film directed by Sam Hargrave and written by Joe Russo, based on the graphic novel of the same name by Ande Parks. The movie follows the story of Tyler Rake, played by Chris Hemsworth, a tough and experienced extraction expert who works for Overkill Extraction Agency, a private military company that takes on high-risk missions. The story begins in Bangladesh, where a popular Indian-made opioid is flooding the streets of Mumbai, India. Nawab, a powerful drug lord and a ruthless businessman, has lost his young son, Ovi, who has been kidnapped by a rival gang. Fearing the worst, Nawab hires the services of Tyler Rake and his team to retrieve his son from the clutches of Ravi's gang, led by Saju, a ruthless mercenary with connections to the Bangladeshi underworld. As Rake prepares for the mission, we see glimpses of his troubled past and personal demons. Haunted by the loss of his fiancée, Yaz, in a previous operation, Rake is driven by a sense of guilt and responsibility. Despite his tough exterior, he is shown to be vulnerable and emotionally scarred, qualities that make him relatable and human. Once in Bangladesh, Rake and his team, consisting of Nik Khan and Smiley, a seasoned operator and a skilled driver, respectively, infiltrate the slums of Dhaka in an attempt to gather intelligence on the kidnappers. What starts as a routine mission quickly escalates into a do-or-die situation, as the team faces stiff resistance from the kidnappers and their allies. As the stakes rise, Rake becomes increasingly determined to rescue Ovi, not just for his client, but also for himself. He develops a bond with the young boy, who is being held captive and is a symbol of hope in a world plagued by violence and abuse. Rake's relationship with Ovi humanizes him, and we see a more caring and compassionate side of his personality. Throughout the movie, Rake faces numerous challenges and setbacks. The team encounters a gruesome and deadly villain, Amari, a former Bangladeshi mujahideen who has reinvented himself as a ruthless mercenary. Amari is played by Randeep Hooda, who delivers a menacing performance that makes him a formidable opponent for Rake. As the story unfolds, we learn more about Rave's backstory and the circumstances that led him to become a mercenary. We see flashes of his training with Yaz, his early days as an operator, and the numerous missions he has undertaken. Through these flashbacks, we gain insight into Rave's psyche and motivations, which makes him a more nuanced and complex character. The action sequences in Extraction are fast-paced and intense, showcasing Rake's skills as a gunslinger and his agility in hand-to-hand combat. The film's cinematography is breathtaking, capturing the vibrant colors and chaotic atmosphere of the Bangladeshi slums. The stunts are realistic and slick, with Rake performing his own stunts, which adds to the overall authenticity of the film. In the end, Rake manages to rescue Ovi in a heart-pumping and emotionally charged sequence that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats. However, the mission comes at a high cost, and Rake suffers a fatal wound in the process. As he lays dying, he turns to Ovi and promises to protect him, which marks a turning point in his transformation from a hardened mercenary to a more empathetic and caring individual. In the aftermath of the rescue, Rake's team attempts to extract him from the war zone. However, Rave succumbs to his injuries, leaving behind a letter addressed to Ovi, which is a poignant and emotional conclusion to the story. Through Rave's sacrifice and actions, we see that he has found a new purpose and meaning in his life, which gives the film a sense of resolution and closure. Extraction is a gripping and intense action-thriller that features stunning action sequences, a strong cast, and a nuanced exploration of the human condition. Chris Hemsworth delivers a solid performance as a complex and vulnerable character, and the movie offers plenty of twists and turns to keep viewers engaged. The film is a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by those who serve as mercenaries and offer a glimpse into their lives, their motivations, and their personal stories.

Definitely has shades of traditional Hollywood hero-driven action flicks. Seems like most action movies these days are racing towards sci-fi, so films like this feel like seeing a dying breed. Compared to other Netflix action movies, this one's a solid effort.

The action sequences are decent, but they could have been better. They don't quite measure up to the Indonesian action flicks. The 10-minute long take is alright, but just alright. It suffers from the same problem as "Tom yum goong" – style over substance, prioritizing length at the expense of watchability. Plus, almost half of that 10-minute take isn't even from the protagonist's perspective. Filming one "decent" 10-minute shot is less effective than filming ten "excellent" 1-minute shots. The latter would have a much better impact and be less technically challenging. Hopefully, Chris Hemsworth will take on fewer action films and more movies like "Rush".

You can see Hemsworth's ambition to become a leading action star, using the most mature formula to create a film that won't go wrong. Netflix's big data writing is also quite cunning – The Mandalorian is popular, so they film a tough guy with a kid; Marvel is a hit, so they get the Russo brothers to oversee it; John Wick is a success, so they follow the trend. In recent years, it seems like you can't call yourself a hardcore action film without shooting some long takes, no matter how retro and rough the details are, or how cliché the plot is. Anyway, being cool is all that matters.

The roughly 11-minute-long single take is arguably the film's only highlight, though it does feel somewhat contrived. Hemsworth's action sequences are clean and efficient, and the hand-to-hand combat is adequately executed. However, the rest of the film is quite mediocre, with a cliché-ridden plot of conspiracy and rescue. The pacing is uneven, with several lulls in the middle. Overall, it's a typical Netflix action flick – watchable for what it is.

8/10 This is a significant step up from Netflix's usual 6/10 action fare. The action sequences are well-executed, the cinematography and sound design are on point, and the acting is solid. The extended long take (although the stitch points are visible) is genuinely impressive, and that's enough for me. As for the critics calling it cliché, you dislike traditional filmmaking, and when something tries to be innovative, you complain about the lack of originality. So, what exactly would be considered good enough?
