Plot

Frank Wyman, played by Craig T. Nelson, is the star drag racer of a top-notch racing team backed by the prestigious oil company, Hap’s Oil. Wyman's racing career spans years, and the once-speedy driver's skills begin to decline with age, hinting at the inevitable retirement on the horizon. As he struggles with his deteriorating performance, his sponsorship becomes increasingly important. Meanwhile, Wyman takes a personal interest in a young, promising racetrack driver. He names him as his replacement, much to the surprise of Hap's Oil Vice President, Bill McKinley. McKinley views the young driver as an expendable component of the team - nothing but a mere placeholder for his own handpicked racers to come. McKinley’s plan is to gradually cut ties with the older and less valuable driver who's been losing speed over the years by slowly decreasing funding of Frank's racing and shifting it towards a promising newcomer. Wyman, sensing this impending danger and being aware of the rapidly changing racing landscape, starts looking over his shoulder. As the racing season commences, Wyman sees his star on the decline, and McKinley's schemes to replace him become more apparent. Frustrated with the oil company’s efforts to diminish his status, Wyman and McKinley are set on a collision course. Their differences drive their actions, leading them to take opposite paths in the pursuit of their goals. McKinley is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure that his own sponsored team is given top priority and that their racing dominance doesn't waver. In contrast, Wyman's main priority remains the well-being of his protégé and ensuring his success on the track. With tensions increasing, Wyman's determination to stay in the game and protect his legacy becomes more pronounced. He begins to question the true intentions of the people around him - the young driver under his wing, his long-standing mechanic, and the corporation he's been racing for all these years. Wyman realizes that he needs to adapt to the ever-changing landscape and retool himself - a drastic change from his usual routine - if he wants to maintain his position as the lead driver. As McKinley’s tactics to get Wyman out of the way escalate, Wyman becomes increasingly frustrated with his declining performances. Despite this, he starts to realize that the time has come to reassess his life and racing career. Frank’s desire for one final triumph on the track pushes him to make bold decisions. The rivalry between Wyman and McKinley boils over into the track, ultimately setting the stage for a critical showdown that will determine the future of the racing team, the oil company, and Wyman’s fate as a driver. Will Wyman manage to prove his worth once again, secure a bright future for his protégé, and stay ahead of McKinley’s attempts to cut him out, or will the increasing odds turn against him?
