Plot
Nicole Walker, a young and ambitious woman, has always been on the lookout for that special someone who would sweep her off her feet. Her idea of the perfect partner is a man who is strong, sexy, and sensitive, someone who would care for her more than anything else in the world. Her search for this ideal lover leads her to David, a charming and charismatic individual who seems to embody all the qualities she desires. At first, David appears to be the perfect boyfriend. He is attentive, gentle, and affectionate, showering Nicole with love and attention. He is everything she has been searching for, and she is swept off her feet by his charms. Nicole falls deeply in love with David, and their romance blossoms into a whirlwind of passion and excitement. David's sweet facade makes her feel adored and cherished, and she is convinced that she has found her soulmate. However, as the days turn into weeks, and the weeks turn into months, Nicole begins to notice a change in David's behavior. At first, it is subtle, but soon it becomes more pronounced. David's mood swings from one extreme to another, and he becomes increasingly possessive and controlling. He starts to monitor her every move, questioning her about her whereabouts and who she has been spending time with. Nicole tries to brush off these changes as mere quirks, but deep down, she is starting to feel uneasy. As the pressure mounts, Nicole starts to notice the darker side of David's personality. He is quick to anger, lashing out at her for even the smallest infractions. He becomes increasingly isolated, shutting her out from his friends and family, and restricting her access to her own life. Nicole tries to reason with David, to bring him back to the loving and caring partner she once knew, but he is resolute in his behavior. David's transformation from a charming and loving partner to a possessive and controlling individual is rapid and alarming. Nicole is trapped in a vicious cycle of fear and abuse, unable to escape the grasp of the man she once loved. She tries to reach out to her friends and family for support, but David's hold on her is so strong that she is reluctant to let go. As the nightmare progresses, Nicole's world begins to unravel. She becomes withdrawn and isolated, unable to cope with the constant pressure and scrutiny of David's behavior. Her friends and family try to stage an intervention, but David is too cunning, too manipulative, to let them in. He becomes increasingly paranoid, convinced that they are all out to get him. In a desperate bid to break free from David's grasp, Nicole turns to a trusted friend, Sarah, for help. Sarah is a strong and independent individual who sees right through David's facade. She tries to convince Nicole that she deserves better, that she deserves to be loved and respected, but Nicole is too afraid to listen. As the final confrontation approaches, Nicole is torn between her love for David and her desire to escape the abuse. She knows that she has to break free, but the trauma and fear have taken a hold of her mind. In a heart-wrenching climax, Nicole finally finds the strength to stand up to David, to confront him about his behavior, and to take back control of her life. With Sarah by her side, Nicole is able to face David's wrath and emerge victorious. She breaks free from the toxic relationship, and begins the long and arduous process of healing and recovery. As she looks back on the nightmare that has consumed her life, Nicole realizes that she was blinded by love, that she was so caught up in the romance and passion of the relationship that she ignored the warning signs. In the end, Nicole emerges stronger and wiser, her eyes open to the realities of love and abuse. She knows that she deserves better, that she deserves to be loved and respected, and that she will never again settle for a relationship that does not treat her with kindness and compassion.

Witherspoon delivers a powerhouse performance (as Nicole), while Wahlberg (as David) is captivatingly intense. Petersen (as Steve Walker) adds a layer of parental dread that is palpable.

There's a definite Cape Fear vibe to the plot. While the chemistry between Wahlberg and William Petersen might be lacking, the tension is definitely there, and the fact that both are undeniably sexy adds an interesting layer. Wahlberg's voice, in particular, is incredibly smooth and captivating, reminiscent of a young Mickey Rourke. The roller coaster scene is a standout, and strangely echoes the chilling roller coaster sequence in Fassbinder's film *Martha*.

Another story of a rebellious daughter causing trouble for her dad – just okay. The suddenness of the "wolf boyfriend" is unexpected, but the rebellious and foolish nature of the daughter is all too common. Watching this movie, the most intense desire is to strangle this troublemaker who brings disaster to the whole family. Westerners are too self-centered, especially during childhood and adolescence. They throw tantrums over the slightest dissatisfaction, feeling like their parents owe them something, and never consider their parents' difficulties. This is a lesson to be learned: make every effort to prevent my own children from turning out this way.
