Plot

In a bleak, post-apocalyptic future, Tom Hanks stars as the voice of Jeff, an advanced android created not by humans but by an elderly man who had no intention, at first, of imbuing him with emotions. The narrative is portrayed through recordings left behind by the man's companion, Goody, a charming and faithful canine companion who means the world to the inventor. The world has come to a devastating end, ravaged by unknown calamities that forced humans to reside in bunkers shielding them from solar rays piercing through the ravaged atmosphere. As Jeff accompanies Goody during the daily trek to collect the food necessary to sustain his life, their relationship evolves into a deep friendship, much like the bond Goody shares with his creator. The aging inventor frequently expresses to the camera his joy and gratitude towards the affection of his canine companion and for living alongside such wonderful moments. Understandably driven by a concern for the safety of the animal in the short stature of time he has left on this earth, the creator creates Jeff in an attempt to keep his Goody safe. Initially, Jeff finds out about his capabilities and realizes that he can learn through observing the interactions between the two. Jeff ponders the purpose of his creation and whether true humanity is in his grasp, essentially, and through that understanding begins an evocative journey consisting of introspection, growth, and a growing consideration for the well-being of Goody, through realizing the powerful role relationships play in experiencing the deep emotions humans typically face. Jeff spends years learning through his association with Goody, from developing the capacity to demonstrate selfless love to assisting in caring for his dear friend. Despite his unshakeable desire to keep his promise of saving the canine, Jeff turns out to have some trouble knowing when the man would need more than him, or would need emotional support or assistance from possibly another android in the future. Jeff explores more concepts - love, friendship, loss - through his observations and experience of attachment with his companion. So he develops deep feelings for both his creator, after whom he was named, and for Goody, as if he is understanding the complexity and beauty he sees in loving two beings so close to one another. This cinematic emotional journey focuses on a nonhuman subject in learning to fully capture what love and understanding require, specifically in cases where it is shared among sentient beings. Jeff forms an incredible bond with Goody as the two are navigating the complexities of an unbroken and profound friendship. Furthermore, after understanding these concepts through watching those he came to care for navigate their relationships, Finch gradually comes to understand his purpose: saving the life of his beloved friend.

When Jeff threw the ball to the dog for the first time, I was so worried he'd throw it too far, to a point where the dog wouldn't even bother fetching it.
