For Love or Money

Plot
In the heart of New York City, a man named Doug Ireland (played by Matthew Modine) is stuck in a humble position as a concierge of a luxury hotel, yet longs to break free and unleash his entrepreneurial spirit. With a vision of transforming a neglected hotel on Roosevelt Island into a thriving business, Doug is presented with an opportunity to turn his dream into reality. However, this vision comes with a hefty price tag, requiring an investment of $3 million to bring his project to life. The clock is ticking, as Doug has a few weeks left to secure an investor before his option on the Roosevelt Island property expires. In desperate need of financial support, Doug sets his sights on a wealthy socialite named Christian Hanover (played by Gabriel Byrne). A cunning and charming individual, Christian is immediately drawn to Doug's infectious enthusiasm and business acumen. But with one major caveat – he needs someone to discreetly manage a personal affair for him. Christian's extramarital affair with a salesgirl, Andy Hart (played by Tate Donovan), has left him feeling trapped, and he is willing to pay a substantial sum to Doug to ensure that his marriage remains intact. Initially reluctant, Doug soon realizes that helping Christian conceal his infidelity could be a lucrative opportunity, not to mention a chance to get closer to his target investor. As Doug embarks on this mission, he finds himself torn between his professional obligations and personal feelings for Andy. Despite his growing attraction to her, Doug tries to maintain a level of professionalism, knowing that his success hinges on his ability to deliver results for Christian. Andy, on the other hand, is unaware of Christian's intentions and is simply grateful for the extra attention from her wealthy and influential lover. Throughout this tumultuous period, Doug finds himself navigating the complexities of Christian's affair while also working to secure the investor's trust and commitment to his business venture. In doing so, he learns a valuable lesson about the high cost of keeping secrets, as well as the consequences of allowing personal relationships to cloud one's judgment. As Doug's relationship with Andy deepens, he must confront his own feelings and the blurred lines between his roles as a confidant, a businessman, and an individual drawn to the woman at the center of the affair. All the while, he must keep his priorities straight and ensure that he remains focused on the ultimate goal: securing the investment and turning his dream into a reality. The movie For Love or Money is a witty and engaging tale of love, deception, and ambition set against the vibrant backdrop of New York City. With its strong performances, clever plot twists, and exploration of themes that are both timely and timeless, it offers a memorable cinematic experience that lingers long after the credits roll. Ultimately, Doug must come to a critical juncture, deciding whether his personal aspirations outweigh his loyalty to Christian and his commitment to Andy. Will he be able to find a balance between his business goals and personal relationships, or will the stakes prove too high to bear? As the clock ticks down, Doug must grapple with the consequences of his choices, leaving audiences to ponder the true cost of love and the value of their own relationships.

Not bad. It's predictable, but I still enjoyed it.

Easy four stars. Kate Beckinsale is a real knockout in this, and she's so young!

It's an open secret that KB used a body double for the nude scene...

Even when Anthony Andrews delves into a suspenseful thriller, his work exudes classic beauty, taste, and delightfully dark humor. Well done! The British entertain themselves with such effortless charm, unlike the American approach of packaging it into an anti-war sentiment. You win awards, I don’t care – the British Empire's dark humor never sleeps.
