Free State of Jones

Free State of Jones

Plot

Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, "Free State of Jones" tells the story of Newt Knight, a farmer from Mississippi who refuses to conform to the societal norms of his time. Born in 1842, Newt grows up in a small community in Jones County, Mississippi, where he witnesses the harsh realities of slavery firsthand. Despite being a member of the Democratic party, which strongly supports secession and the institution of slavery, Newt becomes increasingly disillusioned with the Confederate cause. In 1862, Newt's life takes a drastic turn when he is drafted into the Confederate Army. Instead of fighting against the Union, however, Newt chooses to become a medic, dedicating himself to healing the wounds of his fellow soldiers. This decision is a clear deviation from the traditional southern notion of honor and duty, which emphasizes the importance of fighting for the cause. Newt's refusal to engage in combat leads to his ostracism by his community, particularly his wife, Serelda, who is fiercely loyal to the Confederate Army and the idea of states' rights. Tragedy strikes when Newt's nephew, Davis Knight, is killed in battle. This event serves as a catalyst for Newt's decision to abandon his life as a farmer and medic and return to Jones County, where he hopes to safeguard his family and protect them from the brutal realities of the war. However, Newt's return to his home is met with hostility, and he is branded an outlaw deserter. The Confederate authorities, determined to crush dissent and maintain control, begin to hunt Newt down, accusing him of treason and desertion. In desperation, Newt flees to the swamps, where he finds refuge with a group of runaway slaves led by Rachel, a wise and courageous woman who becomes a close ally and friend. The group, which includes former slaves and free black men, has been hiding out in the swamp for years, evading capture and fighting for their freedom. Newt's arrival marks a turning point for the group, as they see an opportunity to join forces and fight back against their oppressors. Newt's decision to forge an alliance with the slaves and other farmers is a bold move that challenges the norms of southern society. In doing so, he becomes a leader and a symbol of resistance against the Confederate Army and the institution of slavery. With the help of Rachel and his new allies, Newt organizes a rebellion that would eventually come to be known as the Free State of Jones. The Free State of Jones is a makeshift republic that operates outside the boundaries of the Confederate government. It is a community of rebels, free black men, and sympathetic white farmers who are determined to create a new society based on equality and justice. Under Newt's leadership, the Free State of Jones becomes a beacon of hope for those seeking freedom and a more just society. As the war rages on, Newt and his followers face numerous challenges, including attacks from Confederate forces, internal conflicts, and the struggle to maintain their own independence. Despite these obstacles, the Free State of Jones perseveres, serving as a testament to the power of resistance and the human desire for freedom. Through his portrayal of Newt Knight, the film "Free State of Jones" sheds light on a little-known chapter in American history, one that challenges the traditional narrative of the Civil War and the legacy of slavery. By exploring the motivations and actions of a complex and flawed character, the film humanizes the struggles of a bygone era, inviting audiences to reevaluate their understanding of the past and its relevance to the present. Ultimately, "Free State of Jones" is a powerful and thought-provoking drama that highlights the enduring power of the human spirit and the importance of standing up for what one believes in, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

The low rating is surprising... it's actually a good movie! Love Matthew. His acting is consistently top-notch. Someone said it well: he seems to completely reinvent the soul of every character he plays. He's the only actor who I didn't initially find conventionally attractive, but from <Dallas Buyers Club> to <True Detective> to <The Wolf of Wall Street>, every role has captivated me and made me find him unbelievably cool and attractive.

What makes it compelling is precisely what it lacks: grand, legendary narratives and sweeping spectacle.
