From Beyond

Plot
From Beyond is a 1986 science fiction horror film written by Dennis Paoli and directed by Stuart Gordon. The story revolves around the Resonator, a groundbreaking invention conceived by the brilliant and eccentric scientist Dr. Curtis Armitage. Armitage's innovative device, the Resonator, is designed to manipulate the human brain, tapping into the often-misunderstood sixth sense - the ability to perceive and connect with the world beyond the confines of the five classical senses. The movie begins with a series of gruesome and unexplained crimes that leave no apparent connection or motive, aside from the unsettling fact that all the victims have had their brains horribly disfigured. As a result of the chaos and confusion, Armitage is found dead, a victim of his own creation, with his brain brutally mangled and destroyed by the Resonator. One of Armitage's colleagues and associates, Dr. John Elliott, witnesses the horrific incident and barely escapes the catastrophe. However, the trauma of what he has seen drives him to the brink of madness, and he is eventually institutionalized, deemed unfit for society due to his erratic behavior and the dark, macabre visions that haunt his every waking moment. Years pass, and a new arrival at the asylum is Dr. Catherine McMichaels, a brilliant, intelligent, and compassionate psychiatrist who specializes in patients suffering from mental disorders of a particularly inexplicable and bizarre nature. As she delves deeper into the psyche of the troubled patients under her care, she becomes increasingly fascinated with the mysterious and elusive case of Dr. Elliott, a man whose intellect and intelligence she believes has the potential to be fully restored. Dr. McMichaels' unrelenting pursuit of knowledge and her unwavering dedication to her work propel her towards an audacious conclusion: that the key to unlocking the secret behind Elliott's seemingly insurmountable mental block lies in continuing Armitage's work with the Resonator. Despite the overwhelming warnings from her colleagues and the obvious risks involved, Dr. McMichaels decides to reassemble the device, determined to push the boundaries of science beyond the limits of human understanding. Little does she realize, as she becomes obsessed with the mysterious and otherworldly energies emanating from the Resonator, that she is, in fact, setting herself on a perilous journey, one that will open doors to unfathomable realms of horror and darkness. When she activates the Resonator for the first time, she unwittingly shreds the fragile fabric separating our reality from an uncharted expanse of unrelenting terror - a hostile parallel universe. The parallel universe proves to be a realm filled with grotesque, mutated creatures that defy all laws of logic and human comprehension. In this dimension, the inhabitants, referred to as "things" are nightmarish, monstrous entities with a chilling, unearthly presence that seizes the human psyche, plunging its victims into depths of madness that are impossible to endure. As Dr. McMichaels' experiments with the Resonator intensify, more and more of the asylum's residents become entwined in the sinister vortex, dragged screaming into the very portal of the dark parallel universe, where a new world of unspeakable atrocities and eldritch horrors awaits. With time running out for all of them, it becomes glaringly obvious that only one person can put an end to the unrelenting horror - Dr. Elliott, who holds the key to the Resonator's destruction. In the film's climactic conclusion, the fragile bond that unites reality and the parallel universe begins to snap, threatening to unravel the very fabric of both realms. With her own sanity hanging precariously in the balance, Dr. McMichaels is forced to confront the unholy terror that she unleashed by meddling with forces she barely comprehends. It is in this apocalyptic scenario that Dr. John Elliott, now completely restored to his full capacity, finds himself face-to-face with the unspeakable terror that has consumed his colleagues and must make the difficult decision that seals the fate of the damned world.
