Plot

Ghajini is a 2008 Indian psychological thriller film directed by A. R. Murugadoss. The film stars Aamir Khan in a dual role as a man with anterograde amnesia, who sets out to avenge the death of his girlfriend. The film opens with Sanjay Singhania (Aamir Khan), a successful businessman, walking into a nightclub with his girlfriend, Kalpana (Jiah Khan). However, their night out ends in tragedy when Kalpana is brutally murdered by a group of men, and Sanjay is severely beaten. The attack leaves Sanjay with anterograde amnesia, a condition in which he is unable to form new memories. As a result, he forgets events, names, and people around him. With no memory of his past, Sanjay becomes a vulnerable and fragmented person, forced to rely on physical memory aids such as photographs, notes, and tattoos on his body to recall his identity and past. These aids allow him to piece together his life and find his way to his past, a journey which will lead him to avenge the death of Kalpana. Sanjay's search for Kalpana leads him to Jogi (Bipasha Basu), a prostitute who becomes embroiled in his quest for revenge. Jogi is initially hesitant to help Sanjay but eventually warms up to him, sensing his true nature beneath his fragmented condition. As they work together, Sanjay struggles to retain Jogi's information and maintain a relationship with her due to his condition. Throughout the film, Sanjay uses his photographic memory to piece together events and recall his past. He also develops a unique system of using tattoos and notes, known as "remembering sticks," to retain information. However, his memories come in 15-minute intervals, making it difficult for him to sustain a connection with Jogi and the world around him. The second half of the film delves deeper into Sanjay's past, revealing the truth behind Kalpana's murder and the reason behind his condition. It is revealed that Sanjay, as Jhanvi's boyfriend, Sanjay's past identity as Jhanvi, who in turn is his actual name before suffering amnesia, killed the man who betrayed him and his girlfriend and also killed Kalpana in his past self in a fit of rage. As Sanjay closes in on the truth and those responsible for Kalpana's murder, he confronts the mastermind behind the crime, Raghuveer (Pradeep Rawat), a cunning and ruthless businessman who will stop at nothing to keep his secrets buried. Sanjay's quest for revenge culminates in an intense showdown between the two, which has a poignant and emotional resonance considering the complexities of Sanjay's condition. Aamir Khan's remarkable performance and Murugadoss's expert direction make Ghajini a gripping and intense thriller that explores the complexities of human memory and the resilience of the human spirit. The film's unique premise and stunning visuals, coupled with Aamir's powerful portrayal, make it a standout in the thriller genre.
