Ghostbusters II

Plot

The year is 1989, and the once-prestigious Ghostbusters have seen better days. Five years have passed since their initial rise to fame, and they have lost their standing as the go-to paranormal investigators in New York City. Their legendary status now comes from a rather unfortunate incident where they inadvertently covered the city in gooey marshmallows while battling Slimer, a supernatural entity that had become a familiar to them. The Ghostbusters, consisting of Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), have had to take on odd jobs to make ends meet. Venkman is teaching paranormal investigations at Columbia University, Stantz is running a used bookstore, and Spengler is working at a high school as a physics teacher. Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) has also joined the group, serving as the fourth Ghostbuster. The four men once considered the greatest spirit-hunters in the city are now struggling to make a living. Their personal lives are equally struggling. Venkman's romance with Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) has fizzled out, although it remains complicated due to the unresolved feelings between them. When Dana has an unsettling encounter with the paranormal, she finds herself once again at the center of something inexplicable. This time, it's about her one-year-old son, Oscar. As a child of a Ghostbuster's ex-girlfriend, Oscar has been unwittingly affected by the strange forces surrounding him. The baby boy is seen to have a disturbing affinity for a painting from the Vigo the Carpathian, a malevolent entity from sixteenth-century Eastern Europe, who was exiled from the world for his brutal cruelty and heinous deeds. The manifestation of Vigo within Dana and later Oscar signifies a connection that will bring about an impending doom to New York City. A stream of malevolent sludge, or psycho-reactive ectoplasm, flows from baby Oscar, and with it, an eerie and unrelenting force that has the power to destroy everything in its path. Peter Venkman and his team are faced with an urgent call to action when they see the baby's connection to Vigo. The situation takes a drastic turn as the once-dormant, evil force starts wreaking havoc on the city. In order to understand how Vigo was exiled, the team embarks on a quest for knowledge. They find an ancient document, the Book of Mammon, which tells the story of how Vigo was imprisoned. However, the story concludes with a dreadful warning that the Vigo entity can be released when someone thinks positively about it. This sets off a chain of events, and with it, a countdown to the impending catastrophe of Vigo's release. Ray Stantz sees an opportunity for personal redemption as he sets out to capture the supernatural being. He believes this chance could revive their tarnished reputation. Egon Spengler, ever the rational one, is less concerned with prestige and focuses more on understanding and stopping Vigo. Winston, who has seen the worst of humanity, remains skeptical about the return of the spirit and struggles with his own faith in their ability to make a difference. Meanwhile, Venkman's complicated past comes back to haunt him in the form of Dana's new baby son. As tensions rise, the Ghostbusters must find a way to contain Vigo and save New York City from destruction. With the city at the brink of chaos and an eerie, foreboding sense looming over the residents, it is uncertain if the world is ready to believe in the Ghostbusters once again. Their quest for redemption will put their relationships, as well as their lives, to the ultimate test.
