Godzilla: The Planet Eater

Plot

Godzilla: The Planet Eater marks the culmination of the 2017 anime series 'Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters,' and the final installment in the Reboot trilogy. After facing seemingly insurmountable odds against the gargantuan monster Godzilla Earth, the remnants of human society are left to face a catastrophic fate. Their hopes for survival rest with the unlikely trio of Haruo, Lilia, and Dan: the former seeking to eradicate their kaiju nemesis, the latter two searching for a way to ensure the survival of their species. However, as Haruo, the protagonist of the series, embarks on a perilous journey across the desolate wasteland in search of a solution to their Godzilla problem, the landscape shifts dramatically. The skies grow dark and ominous as a golden glow envelops the atmosphere, foretelling the impending arrival of a mighty foe: none other than King Ghidorah, the iconic extraterrestrial kaiju, reborn in the aftermath of an apocalyptic battle with the Earth's guardian deity, Godzilla. Godzilla Earth, the monstrous creature responsible for the devastation that laid waste to the planet, was once the dominant creature of the Earth's history. However, following a catastrophic encounter with King Ghidorah, its status as the supreme ruler was stripped away as its very existence became linked to that of its nemesis. Now, the once-mighty Godzilla teeters on the brink of demise as its energy waxes and wanes with each passing moment. Concurrently, a cosmic battle between Godzilla and King Ghidorah reaches a boiling point as the Earth becomes a mere battleground for an intergalactic struggle. King Ghidorah, an extraterrestrial creature born of the same cosmic force that fueled the birth of Godzilla, now awakens on Earth as a golden, resurrected being. In this final battle, it appears as though nothing short of a miracle will be required to tip the balance in humans' favor against their monstrous foe. Meanwhile, the world's remaining human survivors continue to be held hostage by the destructive forces at play around them. Those who remain are now compelled to face a future fraught with uncertainty, their hopes for a life beyond the wasteland dwindling by the minute as Godzilla Earth's condition continues to deteriorate. Amidst the chaos, the story shifts its focus to Haruo, who in desperation begins to grasp at a glimmer of hope in the face of their otherwise hopeless circumstances. This glimmer of hope arises in the form of a possible bond between humans and Godzilla Earth, one that could potentially provide a key to their very survival. This idea forms the emotional core of 'Godzilla: The Planet Eater,' where the narrative reaches its most personal and poignant moments as the characters embark on a desperate quest for a new lease on life. As the war between Godzilla and King Ghidorah escalates to the heavens, the human party finds themselves in grave danger. As the forces that are at play are of epic proportions, it appears that their only means of survival lies in either finding an escape from the impending destruction or forging an alliance with the planet's current ruling monster – Godzilla Earth. However, when a mysterious, unexplainable voice speaks out in Haruo's mind, the protagonist finally understands that the line between hope and despair might just be a hair's breadth apart. In a heart-wrenching scene where all seems lost, the truth about the origin of Godzilla Earth and its true significance comes to light, challenging all we knew about the monster and forcing us to reassess the true nature of the kaiju that was once considered invincible. However, the final showdown still remains to be had. Faced with their last and final chance at survival, Mikel and the rest are now given an ultimatum: form a desperate alliance with a monster that has ravaged their world or stand no chance at all. As fate plays its final trick on their weary souls, it remains to be seen whether or not the fragile bond between humans and their former nemesis will prove strong enough to see them through to the other side. In its final act, the series takes a bold leap forward by presenting a dramatic, heart-wrenching confrontation between humanity and its monstrous nemesis. While this might not offer anything more than merely emotional pay-off, it sets the film apart as a compelling, humanist critique that offers much more than just mindless, overhyped action.

Having watched the trilogy, the layers become clear. The Little Godzilla/True Godzilla gets one episode, the Mechagodzilla gets one, and King Ghidorah/Mothra get the final one. Parts 2 and 3 are decent, and the cosmic horror style of the third film is even quite interesting. But after all this, why does the protagonist still hate Godzilla? Shouldn't he hate himself the most? And why have a protagonist who's always so loud and frantic, constantly hinting at things without saying them, and wearing a constipated expression all the time? He's so annoying. The 4 stars are for the three giant monsters and the cosmic horror elements.

Godzilla is terrifying, tornadoes and lightning are terrifying, but do I *hate* it?
