Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween

Plot

In the not-so-suburban town of Wardenclyffe, a group of young friends have formed an entrepreneurial venture, dubbed a "junk business," during their after-school hours. Sonny and Sam, two inseparable companions, embark on this endeavor, driven by the dream of unearthing hidden treasure in the discarded detritus that lies scattered around their neighborhood. The duo, with their makeshift cart and optimistic attitudes, roam the streets in search of the next big score. However, their luck takes an ominous turn when they stumble upon an abandoned, eerie mansion belonging to the notorious author R.L. Stine. The house, a symbol of the author's reclusive lifestyle, holds a dark fascination for Sonny and Sam. In a moment of reckless curiosity, they break into the long-neglected home, seeking to uncover its secrets and uncover any hidden treasures within. Their quest quickly turns into a discovery when they stumble upon a mysterious, locked book hidden away in the dusty recesses of the Stine residence. Without hesitation, the duo opens the ancient tome, unleashing a malevolent entity that had been confined within its pages for decades. Slappy, a grotesque and sinister ventriloquist's dummy, comes to life as the words on the page are freed from their written restraints. This malevolent entity is a product of Stine's twisted imagination, created to be a conduit for horror and chaos. At first, Sonny and Sam believe that their discovery is a stroke of good fortune, envisioning the lucrative possibilities of possessing such an item. However, they soon come to realize their error when the dummy begins wreaking havoc on their small town. Slappy's malevolent presence spreads an eerie influence over Wardenclyffe, drawing creatures from the pages of Stine's most notorious novels to the real world. A werewolf from "The Werewolf of Fever Swamp," a monstrous spider from "Monster Blood," and a malevolent, undead entity from "Stay Out of the Basement" materialize in the small town, spreading terror and panic among its residents. As Sonny, Sam, and their newfound ally, Sarah – Sam's quick-witted sister – navigate this supernatural mayhem, they realize that they must put a stop to Slappy's rampage before total pandemonium descends upon their town. The trio embarks on a perilous quest to round up the escaped monsters, with their only hope of containment found in returning them back to the pages from which they originated. With each failure to contain these supernatural entities, the stakes grow higher, as the very fabric of Wardenclyffe begins to unravel. As the stakes grow, so does Sonny's growing unease over his discovery – he realizes that some secrets are better left hidden. Sonny, Sam, and Sarah frantically navigate the labyrinthine streets of Wardenclyffe, racing against time to corral the monstrous hordes. Along the way, they must confront their own fears, as well as face the darker elements of the Stine's imagination that they had unwittingly unleashed. In the process, they discover the dark origins of the sinister dummy that they had set free, a character whose twisted design served as the catalyst for unleashing chaos upon their small town. With the fate of Wardenclyffe hanging precariously in the balance, the trio must band together to prevent the impending catastrophe that threatens to destroy their town. They ultimately must make a desperate, last-ditch effort to reclaim the supernatural entities and restore balance to their community. As the situation spirals out of control, Sonny and Sam must decide whether their friendship is strong enough to overcome the monstrous forces that they had unleashed, and in doing so, perhaps learn the value of discretion when dealing with things that they do not truly understand.

A children's film, churned out by the conveyor belt, this sequel feels more childish than the first. The scaled-down settings and diminished highlights are noticeable. Jack Black makes a cameo and plants the seed for the next installment at the end. The first half, with the appearance of the puppets, creates a decent atmosphere, but the second half descends into a chaotic and tiresome monster mash. Overall, it's a standard holiday-themed film, good enough to spook the little ones. As a fantasy thriller, it lacks any bloodshed, and the battles feel like child's play. The monsters are all surface and no substance, making it essentially a family-friendly spectacle with a menacing facade. From an adult's perspective, it's all too superficial, leaving you unsatisfied. ★★

The ending where the writer gets sucked into the book definitely hints at a third installment! As for the doll... emm... 😱👹👺 But I prefer the first movie because it had cute boys and girls! 😍

Honestly, it's pretty boring, but seeing the Goldbears turn so vicious made me immediately buy a bag to eat at the Morrisons next to the cinema. And I was wondering why the female lead looked so familiar – turns out it's Benthnay from Jumanji!
