Gremlins 2: The New Batch

Plot
When Billy Peltzer and Kate Beringer moved from Kingston Falls to New York City to start their new life together, they couldn't have imagined the chaos they would soon unleash. They found employment in a high-tech office park, where Billy works alongside eccentric boss Mr. Larson's company. Gizmo, Billy's Mogwai pet from their past adventures, also joins them in the city, living with a kindly department store owner named Max. However, it's not long before Billy and Kate find themselves in the midst of a new Gremlin adventure. A series of mishaps leads to the accidental birth of new, mischievous Mogwai. As more Mogwai are spawned and grow into ferocious Gremlins, the situation escalates out of control. Gizmo, feeling threatened by the appearance of new Mogwai, struggles to contain the growing chaos. When the Gremlins infiltrate the high-rise skyscraper, chaos erupts throughout New York City. Panic grips residents as the bizarre creatures wreak havoc, destroying property and putting everyone in danger. The mayhem reaches new heights when a group of Gremlins invades a top-secret laboratory deep within the New York city. There, they begin tampering with the cutting-edge technology in the lab, unleashing unpredictable genetic mutations within the creatures. These new, genetically altered Gremlins possess capabilities that pose an even greater threat to the city's residents, pushing Billy and Kate to their limits. At the heart of the mayhem is Daniel Clamp, the wealthy and flamboyant media mogul, who purchased the department store housing Gizmo. Clamp envisions turning the department store into a high-tech entertainment complex. He wants the Mogwai, which Clamp considers a valuable marketing draw, to live on and thrive. However, Billy's fear for Gizmo's well-being and his concern about the creatures wreaking havoc force Clamp to reconsider his intentions. Throughout the film, there are various comedic elements woven into the story. One comedic highlight features Randall Peltzer, Billy's father, who keeps trying to capitalize on the chaos with various wacky inventions, including a machine to turn animals into Gremlins by adding water and then into their human form by hitting them with a mallet. Despite the levity, the Gremlins consistently escalate their destructive power, forcing the film to become increasingly unpredictable. The climactic battle takes place in Clamp's high-tech media complex. Here, Billy, Kate, Gizmo, and Clamp devise a final plan to eradicate the Gremlins and return the city to order. The plan involves using a mixture of cleverness, chaos, and destruction as the heroes concoct a unique solution to outwit and defeat the Gremlins once and for all. Ultimately, the mayhem comes to a close in a spectacular fashion, as Billy manages to outsmart the Gremlins using humor and ingenuity, culminating in a final confrontation with the leader, Mohawk, a monstrous creature sporting a striking Mohawk haircut. The Gremlins meet their demise as the city comes back to life in the aftermath.

A delightfully disgusting explosion of outlandish humor, featuring the most hatefully endearing little creatures you'll ever meet!

Rewatching this as a supplement, planning to revisit the original soon. The "revolution" falters after overthrowing the idiotic technology, the capitalist skyscraper swiftly resumes operation amidst the devastation – Joe Dante departs with a maximalist, madcap fairytale while deliberately exposing its flaws (even breaking the fourth wall in self-deprecation). This is directorial wisdom at its finest.

6.8, much more unhinged than the first movie. The Gremlins are clearly a caricature of the various evils of human nature. Could the evil born from water be interpreted as alcohol? Also, there are plenty of Easter eggs in the film, especially the one that melts while wearing a witch's hat – a reference to The Wizard of Oz, isn't it!
