Plot

Tracy Turnblad is an overweight teenager living in Baltimore in the late 1960s with her parents Edna and Wilbur, a couple who lovingly but awkwardly support her dreams. Tracy has always been fascinated by the local television show "The Corny Collins Show," a popular dance program that features teenage performers and celebrities of the time. She longs to dance in front of the camera alongside her idols, but her social status and weight make it seem impossible. Tracy's life changes when she decides to take her mother's advice and audition for "The Corny Collins Show." Despite her insecurities, Tracy is determined to make it on to the show and, after several setbacks and nervous moments, she finally gets her chance. On the day of the audition, Tracy's enthusiasm gets the better of her, and she accidentally pushes herself to the front of the waiting line, only to realize that all the other hopefuls are far more polished and experienced. Undeterred, Tracy decides to wait for the other hopefuls to go before her and makes her move. Tracy eventually lands a spot on the show, thanks in part to the intervention of Link Larkin, a handsome and charming heartthrob who becomes her confidant and love interest. As Tracy becomes a regular on the show, she gains popularity and influence, but she doesn't forget about her friends who are still struggling to get by. With the help of her new friends, particularly a black teenager named Motormouth Maybelle and a white teenager named Seaweed Stubbs, Tracy decides to challenge the racial segregation that has been a staple of the show. The show's producer, Velma Von Tussle, is fiercely opposed to any changes that might upset her conservative viewers or her own position of power. Von Tussle is determined to keep the show a segregated institution, and her daughter Amber, a pretentious and arrogant teenager who has a rivalry with Tracy, further exacerbates the problem. Amber tries to sabotage Tracy's chances on the show and even tries to undermine her relationships with her friends. As Tracy and Seaweed grow closer, they begin to discuss the reality of racial segregation in Baltimore. Seaweed is forced to sneak onto the show each week, under disguise, in order to be with Tracy and avoid the racial ban that would otherwise bar him from appearing on the show. Tracy becomes increasingly determined to change the show's policies and make it more inclusive. When news spreads about Tracy's attempts to integrate the show, tensions rise in the city of Baltimore. A protest is organized and tensions between Tracy and her friends rise, but ultimately, Tracy remains determined to do what she thinks is right. The night of the show, Tracy and her friends take to the stage to dance and make their stand. The audience is initially resistant but gradually becomes won over by the spirit and enthusiasm of Tracy and her friends. Velma and her cohorts try to disrupt the show, but ultimately Tracy's message of unity and acceptance prevails. On the night of the finale, Tracy's hard work and determination pay off, and she finds herself at the center of a powerful performance that celebrates the spirit of equality and unity. In the end, Tracy and Seaweed share a heartfelt dance, and the show becomes more inclusive than ever, with all the performers taking to the stage together, regardless of color or background.

The musical numbers are a bit overwhelming, making the whole film feel like a variety show. The theme of racial discrimination feels somewhat diluted. The main issue is that the film's central thread isn't strong enough, lacking cohesion.

Last year, CCTV6 broadcast this, but I didn't get to see it completely. It's about a plus-size girl who loves to dance.

Love you to pieces, James Marsden! You're so adorable! And John Travolta is clearly having the time of his life as a singing and dancing middle-aged housewife!
