Hangar 18

Plot
Hangar 18, a 1998 American science fiction film directed by Gray Hofmeyr, tells the story of a catastrophic event that sparks a chain of secrets, conspiracies, and government cover-ups. The film begins with a dramatic space mission, where astronauts Mark Bancroft (Tom Skerritt) and Robert Price (Michael Green) are part of the Space Shuttle team. During their flight, they inadvertently collide with a mysterious, unidentified flying object (UFO). Although the incident seems minor at first, it has severe consequences, as the UFO's erratic behavior causes it to malfunction and make an emergency landing in the desert near Arizona. The White House, aware of the potential implications of UFO disclosure just before the presidential elections, orders for the incident to be downplayed. Consequently, they deny the existence of the extraterrestrial object, attributing the incident to the Space Shuttle's malfunction caused by the astronauts' incompetence. The truth is shrouded in secrecy, as Hangar 18, a top-secret facility within the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is entrusted with the safekeeping of the UFO. The base's commanding officer, Colonel Clayton (James B. Sikking), orders that the wreckage be taken to the hangar, where scientists begin to disassemble it. Meanwhile, the blame for the incident falls squarely on the shoulders of Mark Bancroft and Robert Price. Faced with the possibility of being labeled incompetent and ruining their careers, Mark and Robert join forces to clear their names and uncover the truth about the UFO. Their quest starts with gathering evidence of the alien spacecraft's existence, and to challenge the official narrative propagated by the government. Their investigation leads to revelations about the nature of the extraterrestrial technology, as they are able to access top-secret files detailing the government's attempts to reverse-engineer the alien material. The discovery not only sheds light on the government's cover-up but also sets the stage for a high-stakes battle between the astronauts and those working to silence them. Bancroft and Price soon realize that they are not the only ones searching for the truth. A determined team of scientists at Hangar 18, including Dr. Lutz (Andrew Robinson), a brilliant engineer, and Dr. Kellerman (Paul Dillon), a scientist initially sympathetic but ultimately loyal to the government, are on the verge of unlocking the secrets of the alien technology. However, their excitement and discovery come with a steep price as the stakes rise, and more people become entangled in the web of secrecy. The government, keen to keep the incident under wraps, becomes increasingly repressive and aggressive in their attempts to keep the UFO's existence hidden. The situation escalates into a battle between those who seek to uncover the truth and those who will stop at nothing to keep it concealed. In the climax of the film, Mark Bancroft and Robert Price make a bold move to expose the truth. The evidence they gather from their relentless pursuit, coupled with the assistance of a few individuals at the Hangar 18 facility, ultimately forces the government's hand. Confronted with irrefutable proof, the White House is left with no choice but to admit the existence of the UFO. Although this victory for truth is fleeting, the outcome has significant repercussions for those involved. The revelation sets off a ripple effect that resonates throughout the scientific community, challenging the long-established status quo.
