Plot
In the 2003 comedy horror film Haunted Mansion, based on the Disney theme park attraction, the story revolves around a family who sets out to rid their home of malevolent spirits. The film stars Eddie Murphy, Terence Stamp, and Nathaniel Parker, who join forces with Marsha Thomason and Jennifer Lewis to bring the paranormal entity to its knees. The film begins with Jennifer Tilly's character, Sara Evers, who has bought the infamous and eerie Stowe Mansion in New Orleans in the hope of refurbishing it. Sara, an aspiring actress with acting ambitions, brings her young son, Mick along when moving to the mansion with Sara's live-in boyfriend and business partner, Jim. However, Sara finds that she quickly becomes trapped within an endless time loop. Every time she enters a door the group explores, they are met with no return. Doors repeatedly trap them inside seemingly endless time loops or in bizarre circumstances, making it difficult for the family to fully grasp that the horrors that befall them, originate from Stowe mansion's seemingly malevolent spiritual realm. These terrifying events catch the attention of Dr. James Taylor (Terry Scott), a down-to-earth but muddled psychical investigator brought in by Dr. Ungerson to address the issue on a more professional grounds. On returning to the mansion to meet Sara and Mick and their son's caretaker, Ramses Banda in present time (when Dr. Taylor was initially commissioned to investigate), Taylor soon diverts that the house holds dark secrets linked to the long lost mansion owner, who perished there. However on realizing that this malevolent energy exists Taylor takes action by taking in a coterie of experts which includes Professor Farnsworth played by Nigel Stock. Each individual works in a diverse fields of the supernatural from exorcisms to psychical research with everyone on their team able to devise theories about the case. However, with the men attempting to hunt down multiple supernatural "parasites" living with them inside the house Dr Murray (Terence Stamp), a genius that finds the only method available - being the only medium able to successfully practice the unorthodox activity of ousting a supernatural entity from the body. He does however place large stakes on himself, which he'd pay with his very life, should the procedure prove unsuccessful. Upon deeper revelation that Taylor comes up against, with his so far far more rational side, while trying to keep up professional dignity; his whole world is put on trial after trying to reason one night with Dr Farnsworth. The rest of the day sees the mansion putting the whole group through the tight rope. Compelling the experts – in the belief that Dr Ungerson was still with it at the time so effectively being betrayed, start to perform methodical strategies. Each unique person to aid in ousting the parasites and also ensure a practical end to the nightmare as the dark spirits within possess many people at the mansion, and slowly every other participant finds him or herself in a grave danger, further plunging Dr Ungerson into an unenviable state with a need full for redemption for betrayals including intentionally losing more psychological evidence while the family faced unending paranormal tribulation at home. As time runs out, it finds Dr. James Taylor taking in the role as rescuer. He takes responsibility for preventing what has gradually started to hurt many people. As tensions all over begin to heat when realizing that the one possessed other's loss would amount to an entire group's loss, the experts go on their way at a last and final outing that involves losing more content before even starting the hard fight to really rescue the children which indeed started at the top – after knowing that Dr Farnsworth was just barely at the time when leaving. With a strong blend of comedy horror and spiritual realism, the Haunted Mansion offers its share of plenty of laughter and wigs by pulling some wackiness, some spooky eerie scenes to ensure viewers maintain the edge of their seats throughout.
