Hello
Plot
"Hello" is a 1995 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by Brian Robbins. The movie revolves around Max Wilson, played by Eric Stoltz, a man who feels disconnected from life and struggles to form meaningful relationships with others. Max has an epiphany after reading a self-help book called "Risk Management," which serves as a motivation for him to take control of his life and approach his fellow commuter, Rory, with whom he shares a daily ferry commute. Rory, portrayed by Susanna Thompson, is a reserved and guarded individual who initially rebuffs Max's overtures. However, Max remains undeterred, and instead of giving up, he presents Rory with a contract stating that, if she accepts, he can initiate contact with her once a day for 30 days. To his surprise, Rory agrees, and Max, thrilled by this opportunity, eagerly looks forward to their interactions. As the negotiations for this contract continue, the two grow closer, with Max gradually learning more about Rory's personality. Despite their awkward start, Max and Rory discover common interests and a mutual affinity that begins to blossom into a romantic relationship. Their whirlwind romance is characterized by a series of humorous, lighthearted exchanges, as they learn to navigate the complexities of each other's lives. Rory is portrayed as a character who struggles to open up and trust others due to unresolved issues from her past. Her reluctance to let her guard down makes it challenging for Max to get close to her, and their relationship is marked by occasional setbacks. As Rory gradually begins to reveal more about herself to Max, he shows remarkable patience and understanding, never pushing her beyond her comfort zone. Throughout the film, Max's life is also affected by the presence of Donald, Rory's estranged husband, portrayed by Kevin Tighe. Their complicated history and unresolved marital issues lead to tension and conflict that ultimately threaten to derail Max and Rory's budding relationship. Max finds himself having to navigate this complicated situation, which puts a strain on his own life as he struggles to balance the risk of falling in love with Rory with the potential consequences of becoming entangled in her family issues. The film's core theme revolves around the idea that people take risks in different ways, often unknowingly, until they find the courage to open up and let others in. Max's willingness to risk rejection by pursuing Rory serves as a catalyst for her to confront her past and let go of her fears. In return, Rory inspires Max to take more risks in his life and seize opportunities that had previously seemed elusive. The movie's tone and atmosphere are characterized by a lighthearted and humorous tone, tempered by moments of poignancy and heartwarming romance. The chemistry between Eric Stoltz and Susanna Thompson makes their relationship believable and charming, adding to the film's emotional impact. "Hello" may not be as well-known as some other romantic comedies, but it offers a thoughtful exploration of relationships, self-discovery, and the importance of taking risks in life. The film ultimately concludes on a hopeful note, suggesting that the willingness to take risks and open oneself to new experiences can lead to profound personal growth and a deeper connection with others.
