High Strung

Plot

High Strung is a 2016 American romantic dance film directed by Michael Maliani and written by Joan Jacobs. The movie takes place in the vibrant city of New York, where a hip hop violinist named Jonathan (played by Keval Shahal) is busking in the subway, effortlessly weaving magic with his violin. It is here that he encounters a classical dancer named Kathryn (played by Charlotte Sullivan), a student on scholarship at the prestigious Manhattan Conservatory of the Arts. From the moment they lock eyes, it's clear that a spark has been ignited. Despite their vastly different musical backgrounds, Jonathan and Kathryn are drawn to each other's passion and artistry. However, their relationship is complicated by their conflicting styles, as well as the pressure to succeed at the conservatory. Kathryn is bound to the strict rules of the institution, which emphasize the importance of discipline and perfection, while Jonathan is free-spirited and unafraid to break the rules. The tension between Jonathan and Kathryn's worlds comes to a head when they stumble upon a group of hip hop dancers performing in the subway. The charismatic leader of the crew, Zack (played by Thomas Doherty), is intrigued by the two lovebirds and proposes a challenge: if Jonathan and Kathryn can find a way to merge their dance styles, the crew will help them prepare for an upcoming competition that could change their lives forever. At first, the idea may seem absurd, given their vastly different backgrounds. However, as they work together to blend their styles, they begin to realize that there is beauty in the fusion of hip hop and classical dance. With Zack's guidance, Jonathan and Kathryn embark on a journey of self-discovery, pushing themselves to new heights as they learn to trust each other and themselves. As they train for the competition, Jonathan and Kathryn face numerous challenges, both on and off the dance floor. They must navigate the complex dynamics of the conservatory, where their relationship is seen as a threat to the institution's traditional values. Meanwhile, their friends and colleagues begin to take notice of their newfound partnership, leading to a mix of excitement and skepticism. Despite the obstacles in their path, Jonathan and Kathryn remain driven by their passion for dance and their love for each other. With each passing day, they grow closer, finding common ground in their shared commitment to their art. As the competition draws near, the stakes become higher, and the tension between them builds to a climactic finale. With the help of the hip hop crew, Jonathan and Kathryn put on a stunning performance that blends their unique styles in a way that dazzles the audience and the judges. As they take the stage, the chemistry between them is palpable, and the tension is electric. In the end, they emerge triumphant, their music and dance speaking louder than words can express. The movie concludes with Jonathan and Kathryn, hand in hand, celebrating their victory and their relationship. The fusion of hip hop and classical dance has not only changed the game for them but has also brought their two worlds together, demonstrating that art and passion can transcend even the most seemingly insurmountable barriers.
