How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies

Plot

M, a young and penniless university dropout, has found himself at a crossroads in life. With a seemingly bleak future ahead of him and no prospects in sight, he is suddenly handed a desperate opportunity. His terminally ill grandmother, having grown weary of her ailing health and the subsequent drain on her finances, has devised a plan that will either bring about financial freedom for her troubled grandson or leave him heartbroken and destitute. She proposes that M take care of her until her inevitable passing, in exchange for a hefty inheritance that M is almost certain she will leave for him. Under these terms, M, understanding his own self-interest and with little to lose, agrees to put his grandmother in a care facility, fully intending to benefit from her generosity after she's gone. However, he's forced to take a little know-how about how the care industry operates and it's how to deal with others as the grandmother eventually discovers. As M and his grandmother form a bond that neither of them fully understands, M finds himself entangled in a complicated web of emotions. On one hand, he's trapped in a situation that promises untold wealth at the end, but on the other hand, he's forced to confront the truth of the kind of person he's become - caring more for the future inheritance than for the life and well-being of his aging grandmother. This moral dilemma is complicated further by M's self-discovery and his connection to his grandmother, which ultimately makes a huge difference. As M navigates the complexities of caring for his terminally ill grandmother, he begins to see the world through her eyes. He witnesses the patient and tender way that she interacts with others at the care facility and comes to realize that this is an opportunity for him to gain more understanding about taking care of others. In his process of discovery, his grandmother is depicted as playing the vital role of changing him and guiding him to make better decisions. The grandmother, while primarily focused on the health and well-being of her grandson, also holds other aspirations that soon come into light. She sees M's reluctance to care deeply for her and suspects that the ultimate intention might be centered around her money. Consequently, she instructs him to sell off a collection of assets she has carefully accumulated over the years, on condition that the cash goes towards purchasing a new home for a family in need, and not her present apartment because ultimately, she would like to know he's going to be successful with her inheritance. Through his care and concern for others that is prompted by his relationship with his grandmother, M slowly becomes more empathetic. He understands the amount of time he has spent neglecting those near to him in preference of just focusing on personal advancement and realizes that his values have been somewhat skewed. As the days dwindle, and M becomes increasingly aware of the nature of his grandma's terminally ill condition, his earlier reluctance slowly dissolves, and he begins to genuinely appreciate his time spent caring for her. Making an epiphanic decision to extend the life-saving cash for one family, he eventually decides that with the inheritance he receives, he must utilize it for helping a whole multitude rather than leaving all of it for personal uses. After an emotional and deeply saddening confrontation with the grandmother, he breaks the news about canceling the inheritance. The grandmother understands him much better and thus reveals her own decision to give all the inheritance to various individuals and organizations, where the impact that's had been going to him in exchange with his time should actually be what remained like what she's taught him. In the end, he gets the invaluable gift of a caring life.

Calling this a filial piety movie feels off – it's almost anti-filial piety in disguise. Grandma devoted her youth to caring for her parents, even handing over the family home to her older brother, who then became wealthy. After she had children, only the daughter truly felt heartache for her, but she's unappreciated. The daughter even jokes, "The assets go to the sons, and the cancer goes to the daughter." M, the grandson, is a genuinely good kid. Initially, it seems he's caring for Grandma for the inheritance, but he turns down money from the uncles and uses the money Grandma saved for him to buy her a burial plot. He is truly freewheeling and thoughtful person. I wonder ,Would M have been so fortunate if he were a girl?

Even though Grandma couldn't afford a burial plot, she never considered touching the million she was saving for her grandson.💔

The most heartbreaking scene is when she's singing in their shared mother tongue with her brother, leaning on his shoulder for comfort, only to be cruelly kicked out the next minute with the words, "Don't ever come back." Even with age so close to death, the bond of siblings crumbles so easily in the face of inheritance.

As expected, it's the classic family dynamic that seems to appear wherever there are Chinese people: no matter how selfish and heartless the son is, the mother always favors him; no matter how much the daughter cares for her, she'll only get a compliment at most, and inheritance is never seriously considered for her. The scariest thing is: the mother herself was once a victim of this very dynamic in her own family... The emotional resonance for me never comes from familial love. I admit it may be related to my own experiences, but more frankly, I simply can't find it touching from that perspective. My empathy lies solely with Grandma herself: her fear and sadness facing hair loss from chemotherapy, her desperate plea for her parents to take her away when tormented by pain in the night...

They didn't film it, I didn't film it, a Westerner filmed "Chinese Culture".
