Plot

Ian Wyndham's life is turned upside down after the sudden loss of his girlfriend, Samantha. Their relationship was complicated, and it's revealed that they had argued that fateful day, which would ultimately prove to be their last moments together. Ian, a successful businessman in his late twenties, struggles to come to terms with the loss, and the memories of their tumultuous relationship continue to haunt him. Their relationship was a passionate and all-consuming one, with both Ian and Samantha deeply invested in each other. As Ian navigates the grieving process, he is unable to shake off the feeling of guilt and what-ifs that linger long after the tragedy. This is especially true since their fight had left their relationship on shaky ground, with Ian questioning whether their relationship was strong enough to withstand the impending challenges of adulthood. As Ian grapples with the reality of Samantha's passing, he is presented with an extraordinary opportunity. By reliving the same day over and over again, Ian gets multiple chances to alter the events that led up to the tragic incident. With each repetition, Ian uses his newfound chance to change course, re-experiencing the moments of their final confrontation, and this repetition serves as a chance to rectify past mistakes. Ian learns to take full advantage of his ability to relive the day, initially altering small decisions in the hopes of altering the course of events. However, his focus soon shifts toward making significant changes to their relationship, working towards a deeper level of understanding and commitment between him and Samantha. This newfound approach forces Ian to confront his own character flaws and shortcomings. Ian also gets to explore what could have been and how he could have potentially saved Samantha. Throughout his repeated tries, he starts to grasp the intricacies of Samantha's personality and emotional landscape, uncovering aspects of herself that he had previously been oblivious to. As Ian becomes more self-aware, he begins to recognize the true worth of their relationship, learning about Samantha's insecurities, values, and fears. This newfound appreciation makes him strive to become a better partner, learning from his mistakes and working on his behavior. Ian's repeated attempts become an opportunity for growth not just for himself, but for Samantha as well. Through these attempts, Samantha gains the confidence to assert her needs and desires, standing up for herself in ways she never did before. Their relationship evolves, and Ian comes closer to understanding Samantha, as their interactions become more authentic. Their communication improves significantly, enabling both of them to express their true emotions and desires openly. This newfound level of empathy allows Ian to genuinely connect with Samantha, allowing their love to deepen. Despite these improvements, Ian finds it increasingly challenging to alter the sequence of events. It becomes apparent that he may not be able to change the course of fate, which forces him to accept the circumstances and let go of his guilt. Ian's last chance arises at the beginning of the film, a repetition that serves as a symbolic bridge toward acceptance. As Ian navigates the circumstances one final time, he finally comes to terms with Samantha's passing. Ian realizes that the repetition has made him a stronger person, with a newfound sense of understanding and appreciation for the time they had together. The film, If Only, leaves viewers pondering the complex nature of love and the inevitability of fate, raising questions about the extent to which we can change the course of events. As the story unfolds, it becomes a poignant exploration of grief, guilt, and self-revelation.
