Plot

I Know What You Did Last Summer is a classic American slasher film directed by Jim Gillespie, based on the novel of the same name by Lois Duncan. The movie premiered in 1997 and has since become a cult favorite among horror enthusiasts. The film tells the story of four high school friends, Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Ray Bronson (Freddie Prinze Jr.), Barry Cox (Ryan Phillippe), and Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who embark on a fateful road trip during their summer break. The story unfolds in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where the friends are high school seniors. They decide to leave their hometown for a weekend getaway to celebrate the end of their senior year. As they drive along the coastline, their car collides with another vehicle driven by a young hitchhiker, Willis McKay (Bridger Zadina). The friends, fearing the consequences of hitting an unknown person, panic and decide to drive the body to a secluded spot and dump it in the water. The incident haunts the group, and they make a pact to never speak about the accident. However, their tightly-knit group begins to unravel as they prepare to start their new lives. Julie, who had been planning to attend a prestigious college, receives an acceptance letter, but her guilt and anxiety over the accident threaten to derail her future. Ray, a high school athlete, tries to win over Julie's affections, while Barry tries to navigate his complicated relationships with his family and friends. Meanwhile, a hook-handed figure starts to stalk the group, sending a chilling message about what happened that fateful night. The friends are intimidated and terrified, unsure of who is behind the menacing figure or what they want. As the suspense builds, the group is forced to confront their darkest secrets and the consequences of their actions. One year after the accident, the friends start to receive mysterious messages and gruesome gifts, hinting that their hidden truth will be exposed. Ray's fishing skills land him a position as a guide on a remote island, where he becomes increasingly isolated and preoccupied with visions and visions of dark omens. The friends are convinced that the killer is getting close, but in reality, the figure's intentions are initially obscured. A second twist is revealed as the group eventually discovers the killer is Willis McKay's brother Jimmy, played by Muse Watson. The hook-handed figure, an injured Jimmy, lost his hand during his family's past violent conflicts. However, upon further inspection, there seems to be 2 men involved in the crime. The pair must have met on an island because the messages were slightly similar to writing, and they eventually find no body. All clues suggested that Julie had no clue and it was an attack on accident victims and all of the facts of this crime were a dark connection to the fishing island. In the final act of the movie, the group tries to unravel the mystery of Jimmy's true intentions and his role in the murder. They piece together the clues, which reveal a shocking twist: the killer has an affinity for a James Patterson novel which was given by his younger brother, and like the book, a specific kind of psychopath also seems to have certain lines. Based on these lines, it seems that the real killer is the friend who purchased a copy of that novel.
