Independence Day

Independence Day

Plot

It's July 2nd, 1996, and the world is bracing for a festive summer weekend. Americans are preparing to celebrate the 220th anniversary of their nation's independence from British rule. However, little do they know that a deadly invasion is imminent. The sky is painted with pyrotechnic displays unlike anything seen before - commercial airliners are descending out of control, crashing into major cities and landmarks with precision and purpose. Among the chaos and panic is President Thomas Whitmore (Bill Pullman), who quickly calls an emergency meeting to discuss the unprecedented events unfolding across the globe. The Pentagon's top brass and military leaders are baffled by the sudden appearances of massive spaceships hovering above the world's major cities. These intergalactic behemoths are towering over skyscrapers, while sophisticated technology has paralyzed the world's military command structures. A frantic search for an explanation begins, but it becomes increasingly clear that this is not a natural phenomenon. Meanwhile, Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith), an F/A-18 fighter pilot, witnesses a catastrophic attack on Area 51 by the extraterrestrial force. In a daring escape, Hiller's fighter plane takes off, attacking an extraterrestrial fighter jet that has followed him to the ground, after he had a firefight with the alien in the sky. He is subsequently involved in further events that will help lay the groundwork for the struggle for humanity's survival. The movie cuts to a global apocalypse scenario as the aliens, later revealed to be the Ravagers, systematically launch their terror campaign across the world. Washington D.C. lies in ruins, the White House in shambles, and a devastated U.S. military struggles to respond to the overwhelming might of the extraterrestrial forces. Amidst this desolate backdrop, President Whitmore orchestrates a massive military recovery attempt. However, American armed forces are ineffectively pushed back, with each attempt at resistance pushed down on their back foot. President Whitmore, now separated from his wife on the eve of what will be a bloody holiday, has a sudden vision of himself addressing a United States that has been utterly devastated by the alien attacks, to rally Americans for courage in their coming armed struggle. The memory of his wife's final wish inspires him, he flees to Area 51 to mobilize a second-line defense against the impending attack. Some of the world's best scientists make an important breakthrough in their investigation of the alien technology, realizing that a computer virus can be transmitted between the Earth's and the alien's computers. These technological discoveries form the kernel of the human response to the impending catastrophe on the 4th of July. It allows for the execution of a plan to upload a virus into the alien's mainframe, targeting and disabling their self-regenerative capabilities. In the midst of a battle-torn world, Captain Hiller, the survivors of the attacks, and a group of the country's most brilliant scientists embark on a perilous journey to Area 51. Their noble quest is for hope – and, ultimately, the survival of humanity. On the eve of the Fourth of July, the stage is set for one final showdown between the human spirit and an enemy from another world. As earth trembles under the weight of the alien threat, there remains only one last hope - fight back against the attackers and assert the resilience that defines humanity.

The Americans have gone nuts! They're using blockbusters to force themselves on the whole world, and they actually want every country to change their national day to July 4th!
