Innerspace

Plot

Innerspace is a 1987 science fiction comedy film directed by Joe Dante and written by Jeffrey Boam and Martin Gardner. The movie takes place in the near future and follows the story of Lieutenant Jack Putter, a neurotic hypochondriac who works as a podiatrist. Jack's life is marked by his obsessive fears and anxieties, which often dictate his actions and decision-making. The story begins with Jack Putter's life as an ordinary podiatrist, who is desperate to find love and meaning in his life. However, his obsession with death and illness makes him a socially isolated person, afraid to pursue relationships or try new things. One day, Jack meets Tuck Pendleton, a charismatic and adventurous test pilot who is volunteering to test a new, highly advanced miniaturization vessel. The miniaturization vessel, known as the "Itchy," is designed to shrink an object or person to a tiny size, allowing it to be transported within a tiny space. Tuck Pendleton is chosen to test the Itchy's capabilities by shrinking himself to a tiny size and navigating through a small object, but things go terribly wrong. Tuck Pendleton accidentally gets injected into Jack Putter's body after a freak accident, and he finds himself inside a living, breathing human-being's bloodstream. Tuck, who is now a tiny person, must convince Jack to help him find his ex-girlfriend, Lydia, whom Jack happens to know. Jack's only condition for helping Tuck is that he accompany him to Lydia's house, and the two reluctantly embark on an adventure to save Tuck's life. As the story progresses, Tuck and Jack form an unlikely friendship, with Tuck teaching Jack to overcome his fears and be more confident. Jack, in turn, helps Tuck navigate his way through Jack's body, facing various obstacles and dangers along the way. The duo must also evade a bumbling scientist, Dr. Howard Bermansdorfer, who is trying to capture Tuck and the miniaturized Itchy. The movie takes a satirical look at society's perception of science and technology, particularly in the 1980s. The script pokes fun at the media's portrayal of science and technology as a fantastical and potentially threatening field. The film also explores the theme of friendship and the human capacity for courage and ingenuity. Throughout the movie, the special effects are impressive, considering the time period in which it was made. The miniature sets and the depiction of Jack's body as a vast, unexplored territory are visually stunning. Martin Short's portrayal of Dr. Howard Bermansdorfer is particularly notable, adding a comedic element to the film. The movie's ending is a heartwarming moment of redemption for both Jack and Tuck. By the time Jack and Tuck finally find Lydia, they have formed a genuine bond, and Jack has discovered the courage to take risks and pursue his dreams. Tuck, on the other hand, has learned to appreciate the complexities and beauty of human life. Innerspace is a lighthearted and entertaining film that combines science fiction and comedy elements. With its impressive special effects, satirical humor, and themes of friendship and courage, the movie has become a cult classic among fans of science fiction and comedy.
